British alternative country act The Bondurants kicks off their next chapter with new single “Southside Looking Down”, and it’s gorgeous. The Leeds-based band’s already got a handful of EPs and a full-length under their belt since 2012 AND have been exploring the alt-country genre with a very nice british twist since their earlier days.

The way The Bondurants perfectly blends the essence of the traditional americana and country instrumentations and melodies with a distinctively British approach sounds incredibly fresh and interesting. There are some aspects of britpop to be found in their sonic palette, and it feels like they are bringing it forward more and more on their new material. Last year’s Take the Night Away EP, for instance, was the perfect illustration of those influences intertwining. It is absolutely lovely to see that the band kept that up on “Southside Looking Down”.
The Bondurants always have such a nice energy to their music, there is a very vivid image that is being painted on each song. “Southside Looking Down” tells a tale of longing for someone who took a different path, and it does so with a stunningly beautiful production. There is a very nice crescendo to follow as the song starts, and by the time we get to the final chorus there is already everything: backing vocal choirs, twangly country guitars, orchestrations and increasingly gorgeous vocal melodies. It’s a near flawless song, bringing both the country and the pop rock together into the centrefold in a way that leaves you dancing to it for hours.
There is something about the way “Southside Looking Down” flows that it reminds me of some of the great Tim McGraw songs from the early 2010s, and it sounds so refreshing to hear a contemporary take on said sound. The Bondurants manage to create their own version of it all, though, carefully crafting sounds that feel both nostalgic and timeless at once. This is the first single from the next step of their journey, and they already hit the ground running with a heartfelt song that sounds so good. I cannot wait to hear what they come up with from here on in.
