Mountains of Jura appear from magical foggy landscapes with a self-titled LP

Those fog-covered serene landscapes inform the sound of Mountains of Jura’s newest record. It’s not a specific landscape somewhere in a known country, but one present in the listener’s imagination. Mountains of Jura takes a keen leap away from the familiar and dives into beautiful shoegaze atmosphere, bridging the familiar with unforeseen in the valleys of those tall mountains.

PRE-ORDER “MOUTAINS OF JURA” ON BANDCAMP NOW!

Referred to as “the Lynx album” by the band Mountains of Jura, the LP is a 7-track journey into the vast, emotionally diverse wilderness, much like the untouched scenery a lynx would inhabit. Along the journey, captivating guitar melodies and haunting vocals form the scene, while percussion sets the pace from the slow and calm to fast like a racing heartbeat. There are no predefined stories put in place – Mountains of Jura intends the music speak for itself. That’s also the reason behind the album having no name of its own similarly to the “the Owl album” debut, as in a realm where music is allowed to create its own story in a listener’s mind, names would be restrictive.

One can imagine a lot of things happening within the songs. Introspective slow stroll along an unknown forest path during dusk or a rainy afternoon, rush of blood or a storm of feelings somewhere on a hilltop, the associated emotions are present in the reverb-soaked melodies that come haunt again later. One thing is certain in here – the experience is hypnotizing and sometimes even eery. For the weary mental state, however, it manages to become so inviting that going back to everyday life becomes undesirable.

Once the journey comes to an end, nocturnal air takes over along with the call of the album’s creature to mark the final destination in the realm where you feel both hopelessly lost, but also unusually comfortable. Whether you wanna stay here standing against a pine tree or go back to the comforts of your everyday life, is up to the listener. Nothing feels completely for granted anymore, that’s for sure.

Mountains of Jura press photo

“Jason (bass) and I have been making music together for many years through different projects. We collaborate on everything. All these songs started as improvisational jams between the two of us. We take ideas and mold them into more structured songs. Once we had enough ideas we were happy with, we spent several weeks playing together as a band and finalizing the feel and letting Greg (drums) bring his magic. At this stage I usually improvise vocal melodies and Jason and I write lyrics based on the mood or emotion that comes out in that process. What starts out as very loose and feel oriented eventually becomes a very deliberately crafted song.”
