On May 31th, Australian singer-songwriter NELDA drops her new single, a home-seeker tune “Home is Where I Go”. Swaying in the charm of jazz-pop atmosphere, the questions of belonging meet the revelation that one can create home wherever they go.
Where NELDA is creating her home, jazzy piano melodies meet her eloquent vocals that immediately create a feeling of ease and a sense of optimism. Classic laid-back drums run along with the piano, forming a pleasant atmosphere in which dreams find easy soil to root in. There’s space for existential questions in the form of where exactly she belongs to, and where the place called Home would be.
Formed into a groovy soulful jazzy pop, the tune is a melody of a traveler, someone who has left the place of birth and now follows a whim. While being so far away from the familiar, every place is strange, but once the song takes root in a spot of rest, the feeling of Home soon follows suit.
‘Home is Where I Go’ is a co-write with an Australian songwriter Etoile Marley. In addition to the interviews with the foreign songwriters settled in London and lyrics being inspired by themes arising from the voluntary displacement, for the music side I had an idea to experiment with modes. I wanted to infuse pop with jazz flavours. This particular song’s main groove is based on Lydian Dominant mode. The musical side for all the songs of the upcoming album was either completely or almost fully on me. Also, the lyrics for ‘Home is where I go’ me and Etoile co-write in an hour.
It’s the second single coming from NELDA’s upcoming concept album, which features themes surrounding voluntary displacement. Being abroad looking for a better future, moving away from home, creating a new place of belonging and more will come along in July this year.
Expect pop-jazz style with very fresh/contemporary drumming style played by a young jazz drummer Artist – 16 years old. He currently attends Guildhall Jazz Juniors, Barbican, London.
