British musician S J Denney by this point has already cemented his own name as one of the most PECULIARS within the indie folk scene. After several releases that date all the way back to 2015, Denney is now back with something new. “Friends and Lovers”, his latest single, sees the artist stepping forward into new directions, new production styles and melodies, and it is so interesting to hear that.
On “Friends and Lovers”, we see S J Denney experimenting with the afrobeat genre, which is something he’s never done before. The way Denney manages to add new things to his sound and expand within the soundscapes he’s already so beautifully built in the past is truly remarkable and that is exactly what is happening here.
Denney has written, produced and arranged the song entirely by himself, as a way to keep his vision intact and it works perfecly. The sounds explored by the artist on this song are very different than those we are used to, and it results in a completely new experience. It’s different, it’s interesting and it’s so much fun to listen to. “Friends and Lovers” sounds incredibly fresh and unique, the way the percussion dominates the background of the track alongside the choir chants creates an atmosphere that feels like nothing we’ve got from him before up until this point.
“Once I’d sketched out the idea, I recorded a basic drum track along with 14 other percussion instruments”, Denney himself says about the process of writing the song. “Most of the instruments you hear were played by me, with some additional icing supplied by a handful of amazing musicians from around the world”, he concludes. What Denney has accomplished on his new single is incredible from start to finish – the melodies and weird little sounds made from so many different instruments truly transport you into another realm, and it’s a wild and joyful ride.
“Friends and Lovers” is a bold step, something that felt unpredictable and like a risk that completely paid off. It’s refreshing and exciting to listen to Denney branch out into other territories, changing so much of his own music while still remaining true to his own sense of self. “Friends and Lovers” is an experience that sounds so good, calm and comforting with a warmness that feels both familiar and surreal like a fairytale from a far-off land – you’ve never heard it before but are immediately enthralled.
