Ease into soulful jazzy atmosphere, where sadness meets self-inspecting humor, the state where there isn’t anything left to lose anymore. Emotion-wise, this is the rock bottom where the sun has long lost its power, but in the dark there’s this blue twinge of glimmer that comes from Drue’s vocals. Where fair weather friends only come for a good time and the bad times are spent all alone, there lies big stinging lonely sadness. That, accompanied by hundreds of senseless expectations thrown at you, makes “The Drought” feels like a bit of an oasis, where the messed-up feelings begin to gain coherence. When you’re alone, the true you emerge.

Spiritual in essence, the self-unraveling song puts those hurting feelings into phrases that have ended up very quotable. “God bless the child who runs this nation” is essentially a jab towards the melodramatic state of the brain that allows this mess to be a thing. And there, in the most squeezing state of loneliness, the numbness comes in: “I don’t need anyone, I’ll easily move on…”
Life had become overwhelming, inundated with endless choices I believed I wanted. Yet, amidst the chaos, all I truly craved was simplicity. Exhausted from the incessant demands, I longed for a moment of respite. It seemed people only sought my company when I radiated joy and laughter, oblivious to the consuming sadness that engulfed me. Despite its omnipresence, my sorrow was pushed aside, leaving me isolated in my turmoil. In a moment of despair and numbness, I penned down my emotions.
Months later, these heartfelt lyrics beckoned for melodies. Initially, my attempt to marry words with music ended in tears, an hour and a half of uncontrollable sobbing. Yet, with resolve, I returned, and as if guided by some unseen force, the music flowed effortlessly, providing solace in its embrace. Each element of this song, captured in raw first-takes, was initially intended as a mere guide. However, upon reflection, the unfiltered vulnerability encapsulated within these recordings proved to be the essence the song yearned for, ultimately shaping its final form.
