Repeat’s New Punk Album – Off to the “Rat Race”

REPEAT. The rat race. The sound of the rat race… what comes to mind for you when you think of it? Ahh… the sound of us manically working through the daily grind of navigating this maze we call life. What would that sound like?! Watch out for that electrified cheese, is what I’d say to that. As the Swedish band Repeat would say, “get ready for death.”

Last Friday, June 7th, the band offered up their soundtrack of the times, fittingly called “Rat Race.” And it resonates with me, for sure. I can’t think of a more accompanying sound to our society’s shenanigans than that of a garage fuzz, noise laden, dissonance. The band invokes vibes somewhere between Queens of the Stone Age and Bad Religion with their latest album. Check it out HERE – streaming everywhere.

Released through their label TH Records, the album is the band’s follow up to their self-titled debut album in 2023. Previously released singles “Not Enough” and a personal favorite of mine, “Man on the Moon,” are included with this release. Another standout track to me on the album is a song called “Reasons.” It has the melodic, upbeat feel of a skate punk type of song, but with stacked grungy guitar work reminicent of an early anthemic Weezer song.

The self-described “Stoner Rock” band presents nine songs in total on “Rat Race.” Songs like “Enemy” and the title track “Rat Race” in my opinion epitomize that 1970s jean jacket, burnout vibe, with what sounds like an underlying Motörhead influence.

In describing the recording process, the band states: “We prefer the short format, and the recording was mostly ‘live’. We’ve put more time into the lyrics and the album is very much a self-reflection. We also wanted to hone in on how it would feel to play the songs live.”

The band recently played in Malmö in front of an enthusiastic audience on May 22 who got to hear the new material before the drop last Friday and the band has several more gigs lined up in Sweden in the near future.

For fans of any of the aforementioned bands or soundscapes, Repeat’s “Rat Race” is an album surely to be enjoyed.
