Experience the nordic wilderness with Cataldo Cappiello’s new single “Taiga”

This June Cataldo Cappiello introduces his newest piece of work – a chilling, crystal clear instrumental musical journey titled “Taiga”. Inspired by medieval Northern Europe and spurred by his ambitions in making soundtracks and scoring as a full time job, Cappiello shows the dramatic beauty that is this wild and fairly unfriendly land with its cold embrace.

Much like the generally silent landscape, “Taiga” takes the form of vastness inhabited by the few, but rugged creatures. This, along with the sometimes freezing cold climate, is reflected in the piece’s minimalist approach, where each individual note is given space to shine through the crisp atmosphere.

Minimalism isn’t the only thing present here – the sheer epic of Nordic lands has been rather chillingly represented in the second half of the piece. A choir of male vocals and symphony of strings and percussion leaves an incredible impression of its weather-hardened inhabitants, while well-chosen breaks in sound makes the piece feel like a hawk soaring over tall trees and hilltops to reveal more majesty.

Inspiration for “Taiga” came from multiple places, most notably the productions of Studio Ghibli. Cataldo Cappiello also pays homage to influential composers like Andreas Kübler, Joe Hishaishi and Nobuo Uematsu. Born out of a time of struggles which left the artist yearn for a place of vast freedom, “Taiga” came to be as a self-created haven free of all worries. Cappiello plays a variety of instruments, and the chorus part came to be as seen on this Instagram clip of his:

I am a sensitive soul, and it is in my nature to yearn for higher and higher levels of physical and spiritual freedom. Anyway, modern society keeps finding new ways of trapping me in golden cages and cutting my wings. “Taiga” is my response to that. A walk in the northern trees; stepping on puddles, leaves and small twigs. Feeling it all under my bare feet.

The northern lights are peeking through the pines’ shedding branches. This is the calm, dusky setup of “Taiga”‘s introduction. But suddenly, the track spreads its wings, and opens up in a glorious climax – I am one with Earth and Sky at the same time, and I feel Alive. Free to scream, to cry of joy, and to purify myself from the sorrows of mortal life, through the joys of mortal life.

This, with all my might, I want you to feel. And since I still thought it was not enough, I made it happen twice in the same song, but in two different ways – find your freedom, as any day might be the last, and it’s never too late for loving.

Cataldo Cappiello

Cataldo Cappiello hails from Italy, currently based in the UK, where the artist composes music in personal home studio. He started off as a student learning guitar, becoming increasingly interested in composing, arranging and producing music as time went by, and is now exploring new heights composing soundtracks. His musical journey is accompanied by trusted friends at Don’t Stop Studio, who help bring out the most in the music through expert mixing and mastering.

“Honestly, I’m still searching for my mission in life. Maybe I’ll become a soundtrack composer, or a music influencer. Or maybe not.
What I know is that music heals me, and is my unfiltered, inevitable and sincere mirror. As a human being, I feel, I grow, I suffer, I love, and I hopefully evolve in the process. And so does my music. As a consequence, I refuse to limit myself to composing in a single musical style or genre: every day, I discover a new emotion, and those emotions need to be turned into new moods, whether that means weaving melodic soundscapes or abrasive distorted pieces.”
