Rooted in poetry that centers itself both as political statements as well as about the mundane daily life, Cornelius sounds dreamy as his vocals are but a whisper over the intertwining of the acoustic guitars in the background. Across the eight songs that spawn his new album, everything sounds softer and lighter than what we’ve heard before. But said lightness is only matched by the intensity of the feelings portrayed.

On opening track “Come and Take Your Boy” we already get all of the emotions out, as Cornelius sings a song written as a part of a BBC Radio 4 program in which he talked to African-American fathers whose sons were killed by the police. Needless to say, it’s an incredibly emotional song featuring gorgeous melodies and sweet acoustic guitars that do an incredible job in easing you into the material.

The themes of loss are very much present on this album, and they take many forms. The tragedy of a school shooting in Texas is portrayed beautifully in “Military School”, sung from multiple perspectives as Cornelius tries to show empathy and understanding in the face of the horrific events. It’s a sad lullaby, a way to give the victims a long deserved goodnight.

On “The Way You Leave”, Cornelius wrote a song for his elder sister who was in the hospital with a brain tumor and put up the biggest fight before finally letting go. Curiously, it’s one of the most upbeat songs on the album and celebrates her life and battle til the end in a gentle and honest light.

Painting is an incredibly rich album, dealing most of the time with sensitive and heavy topics. Everything is backed by a beautiful acoustic production, that most definitely packs the same punch as his previous amplified EP – and maybe even more. On Painting we see an artist doing what he does best to deal with the ups and downs of life, which is to write and sing about it. There is an overall cathartic sentiment that permeates the album, making it a sad story as much as it is beautiful and dynamic.

Cornelius Eady Group is at his finest as a songwriter on this album, portraying intense and dramatic scenes of life and death with an intrinsic lightness and subtlety that is truly admirable. On this work, the artist transcends into new heights – all while still firmly grounded in his poetry.
