Disconnectica’s bold and vintage exports on new album “Eclectic Dystopia”

Disconnectica "Eclectic Dystopia" Robert Webb

Disconnectica is a solo project led by Australian musician and artist Robert Webb. Ever since 2019 he’s been releasing music that is increasingly interesting in its foundations, combining indie pop sensibility with classic rock’s psychedelic tastes and culminating into one powerful sound that feels both comforting and confrontational. Eclectic Dystopia is the artist’s FULL-LENGTH debut, that shines across a myriad of different styles, influences and strenghts.

“New listeners should expect something a bit out of the norm. A bit left of center. A wide range of musical genres, and tracks with epic musical arcs” – Robert Webb

Across the ten tracks that make up the album, we get to experience Robert’s mind come to life as he plays around with unique sounds and production techniques. The album’s opening track is also its lead single “Deviate”, that features influences that range from The Beatles into Radiohead in a track that sounds and feels like an avant-garde experience. “Deviate” shows Robert’s creativity rummaging through synthetic sounds that swirl around themselves in what could only be described as an eclectic dystopia, really.

Its surreal music video illustrates this landscape very well, as it carefully blends the lines between illusion and the real world. It serves as a bold testament of what Robert is here to do: music that is challenging, euphoric and utterly unique.

As the album flows along, Robert’s stylistic choices go from Indian-inspired sitars (“Somewhere Always”) to idyllic post-punk landscapes, like the ones heard on highlight “Reveal”. “I’m a bit of a hermit, and never quite fitted in, and I think my music reflects that. I think the tracks are all about broken people in some way”, the artist points out about his most personal inspirations as a songwriter. “Everyone has their own personal dystopia, and this is an eclectic collection of them”, he concludes.

Robert always finds a way to merge all of his sonic influences together into one seamless picture, one that feels always slightly out of place as something that coud easily fit into some other time in musical history. The artist’s creativity and imaginative mind comes alive as he ignores what should be expected and just brings forth whatever the hell he feels like bringing; and this is the exact energy that permeates this album as a whole.

Eclectic Dystopia is a body of work unlike most others, as it proves itself to be unafraid of failure as it ventures on the most exquisite experimental routes. Robert is no beginner in this game, and he’s been around long enough to know that his experiments would sound and stand as fresh and unique perspectives, filling in the gaps of a sonically boring mainstream musical landscape. We’re talking about an artist who dares to the step towards the unknown, betting on unusual sounds and production choices that only elevate what he’s setting himself up for to higher levels of inventiveness.

Robert knows better than most how to keep his music sounding innovative, fresh and creative as he juxtaposes multiple different aesthetics into the same song. As we can hear on the stunning “The Shape of Pears”, a song that combines sounds found in indie folk and 90s alternative rock, into something that feels hauntingly beautiful in all of its unparalleled shapes.

The artist also knows that this album as it would be a very singular one in sound and trajectory, one musical journey that feels personal and impossible to close out. So, his decision to end the album on “Letters to Santa”, featuring a softer production that serves as background to guest singer Naomi Summer’s operatic vocals stands as a very smart one.

Eclectic Dystopia is an album that feels like a journey into the unknown. Robert Webb took all of his chances at once, bringing into the centrefold the most unusual and engaging perspectives. His provocative vision of what contemporary music could be really stands tall as one that could never be matched by anyone else. On his debut album, the Melbourne-based artist goes all in relentless and unafraid to do the impossible, and he emerges on the other end as one of the most alluring and ingenious artists of our generation.
