London-based six-piece indie rock band Seafarers has returned with “Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold On You)”, the second brand new single from their upcoming third studio album. Starting out as a jazz/folk fusion project led by artist and musician Matthew Herd, the group’s ever-evolving sound has grown to encompass rich elements from chamber pop over the years, culminating in their stunning second studio album II, released back in 2022. Their new song is an homage and tribute to classic Nashville country ballads from the 80s, marked by impeccable storytelling and instant setting. Like a cozy cup of coffee on a wintery sunday morning, the music made by Seafarers stand as a warm salvation from the cold outside and this is even more apparent on “Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold On You)”.

Encircled by melancholia and fascination, the sounds explored by the band feel enchanting and charismatic as they expand their musicality even further and bring forth some jazz horns into their background. The wistful “Everything I’d Do” stands as one of the hightlights of Seafarers’s career up until now, blending together a marvelous sense of space and yearning backed by an incredibly romantic production. Songwriter Matthew Herd was inspired by a trip to university town of York around Christmas time, taking him back to his own college days filled with heartbreak, hopefulness and heavy drinking. “Everything I’d Do” creates its own magical atmosphere of both sorrow and optimism, as the characters navigate the uncertainties of youth.
Influenced by legends such as Bonnie Rait, Sinéad O’Connor and Emmylou Harris, frontman Matthew said that he was trying to write a song that belonged to their universe and he ultimately succeeded – as “Everything I’d Do” sounds both strong-willed and fragile. The artist has also stated that the upcoming yet-to-be-announced album by the Seafarers will be bigger and brasher than anything they’ve put out before. The band’s approach to the production was to be inspired by the maximalist hi-fi style of the 80s in its sound, but still focused on small narratives and storytelling at its heart.
Currently expected to be released in October, the third album from the Seafarers is off to an excellent start. Two amazing singles in, and we’re already eager to hear more from them and to see what else the band’s got in store for us this time.
