London-based singer and songwriter Fiona Amaka has been releasing music since last year and she’s already got a great string of singles under her belt. Her sound walks the line between classic rock and soul, and she creates unique landscapes with gorgeous vocal harmonies that feel timeless. All of her strengths shine at once on this beautiful acoustic rendition of her track “Tell Her Why”, proving that Fiona can do just about anything.
By stripping back, the light psychedelia that inspired the original production and focusing on acoustic guitar and vocals, Fiona has elevated the already great song into new heights. The artist names legends such as Stevie Nicks and Smashing Pumpkins as influences, and you can definitely hear those lingering in her vocal delivery and construction of melodies much more clearly on the acoustic version.
“Tell Her Why” was recorded and produced in London by guitarist Andy Zanini, who contributed with the beautiful arpeggios that can be heard as Fiona’s vocals caress the listener with loving softness. It’s a near flawless arrangement, one that completely reimagines the song and transports it into delicate territory. Packed with heartfelt vocals and intimacy, the acoustic reinterpretation manages to make the song much more emotional and powerful.
With lyrics dealing openly with the dark side and hard times that come with relationships, this acoustic setting makes the song sound closer and feel even more special and universal. “Tell Her Why” explores difficulties with graceful realization and understanding, sounding like a safe place for wondering where to go from there. If on the electric version is like Fiona is engrossing the wounds and how they came to be, the acoustic one is where she is healing them and looking forward. And in the end that is all we can ever hope for.
