BDEE + the venomous oranges – “Dinos in Vietnam Sessions”

BDEE + The Venomous Oranges article cover

BDEE + the venomous oranges is a project founded by Jamaican artist Brian Anthony Abraham Donaldson way back in 2008, and eventually teamed up with producer Will Forthman. After years of hovering around the edges and releasing music independently, the band released their proper debut album dark/ambient in 2016 and followed it with the two EPs Warpspeed and and ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRUM between the years of 2018 and 2023. BDEE is in the neurodivergent spectrum, and his latest EP comes as a statement of liberation and authenticity in search of understanding, but without ever making room for what is expected. Now, they recorded a live session as a part of the Dinos in Vietnam project, which took place at the Grifters Studio in Long Island.

The Dinos in Vietnam Sessions started during the pandemic in 2020, founded by Jay Carrie and Will Forthman, as an alternative to live shows in pandemic times. On their session, BDEE performed their way through all of the tracks from their latest ULTRAVIOLET SPECTRUM EP and also included “Warpspeed” and “Diamond Stealers” from previous releases. The soundscapes made by BDEE and his band range from psych rock to DIY punk in a fatalist and fleeting manner, like a truly groundbreaking experimental take on what indie rock can sound like.

BDEE + The Venomous Oranges makes music that stands on its own, never caring about what others say that should be done and caters to whatever the hell he feels like making – and its electrifying stuff. Falling somewhere between Sonic Youth and Tame Impala, the sounds navigated by BDEE are an experience on their own and leave you thinking about the unusual production choices, chord changes and arrangements for days. On this live session, the band is absolutely on fire, and they are eating it up.

BDEE + The Venomous Oranges

The Session, thankfully documented in video form as well, shows BDEE and the band at their rawest, most uncompromising and unhinged. The energy that flows from them as the songs start taking shape is uncanny and powerful from start to finish. They sound absolutely free as they are playing this, and it comes off as an intimate moment of honest truth not always seen in live music, especially experimental music such as this.

As the band powers through eight tracks with fierce disposition and attitude, you can’t help but let your jaw drop. The intricate and unusual arrangements sound even bigger live as BDEE goes from growls and howls to falsettos on his vocals with certainty and clarity. BDEE + the venomous oranges have always been known for their energetic live shows, and on their own Dinos in Vietnam Sessions, they stand as a powerful live band, balancing traditional melodies with experimentalism in equal measure and distilling both a sense of unease and fun all throughout.
