English indie pop act Lemonade Sin just released their second full length project, the concept album Deadly Sins heavily inspired by the biblical notions of the unforgivable. The band was co-founded by experienced musicians Lee Friese-Greene and Simon Aldous and they have been putting out music under the Lemonade Sin name since 2019, including two EPs and several singles aside from their stunning debut album Anagrams from 2022.

On their sophomore effort, we get to see the band evolving and experimenting with a lot of different genres and influences that surround the indie and alternative realms, such as dream pop and shoegaze, twee and power pop, while maintaining their characteristic vocal interplay between Lee and Simon as a common thread. Over the fourteen tracks that make up Deadly Sins, we get to see exactly how everything comes from a mutual love of music, drawing strongly comparisons to the early 90s English independent scene.
The thought process behind Deadly Sins was to make an album inspired by such concepts, as the band themselves say about the behind the scenes. “Our first stage was to have a brainstorming session about what each sin meant to us. Armed with the notes from these we then had an immersive songwriting session, spending 12 hours in a flat with all other distractions removed with the aim of writing as many songs as we could”, and this collaboration aspect really shines through. There are two tracks inspired by each of the seven deadly sins, and they range in topics from heartbreak and desolation to social media-inspired fomo and general human frailty.
Human connection through error, in one way or another, is what really brings the thematics of the album together. Even with such blunt and religious inspirations, there is real connection and empathy on the songs that come in the form of clever and understanding lyrics – such as the gluttony-themed “Plenty in the Pantry”, that ends up revealing that the overindulgence comes from a broken heart and anxiety.
Emulating the best of acts like Imperial Teen, Belle and Sebastian and Lush, there is plenty of cynical humour in the lyrics too. The band isn’t afraid to be straightforward in their lyricism, putting both that empathy as well as the judgemental sarcasm in the centrefold of the songwriting. That constant switch makes this an incredibly fun listen, filled with twists and moments of ‘wait, what?’ that really make Deadly Sins a truly unique listening experience.
But, at the end of the day, this album is about real and relatable human practices, and the songwriting does an incredible job in subverting what is commonly associated with the sins themselves and painting their lyrics as honest and slice-of-life as they possibly could. The band manages to keep the lightness afloat, never once getting too dark or overwhelming and that is quite a feat given the backstory of the work.
Deadly Sins is a pretty bold step forward for the band, who sounds more mature in their songwriting and inventive in their production than ever before. Adding a myriad of different sounds and influences, Lemonade Sin on this album goes from indie pop to grunge to country to electronics in the blink of a crinkling eye. Lemonade Sin created an album that is unlike most others, navigating dark religious themes with grace and carefully curating their sound into a dynamic and ever-changing atmosphere that keeps you on the edge of your seat the entire time.
