This September, a potent alt-rock band Carrie Abyss reveals their new song “Mass Destruction (of My Head)”. It’s a single of battling with turmoil as a Mid-Eastern woman, released in the times of increasing turmoil currently ongoing in the UK. No matter what country though, people of different ethnicity are still struggling with fitting in and “Mass Destruction” sees the constant battle getting the best of a person just trying to live.
Where else could this fight take place, then the barren wasteland devoid of anything that’s safe or offering comfort. “Mass Destruction (of My Head)” takes the shape of the main character standing, facing the slicing, dusty wind and staring at the endless obstacles set in her path. Distorted guitars and slamming beats build a strong contrast with silky emotional vocals, both giving despair and rage their two distinct shades of color. There’s also a strong dose of determination, the kind that just keeps pushing forward as there is nowhere else to go.
Those vocals, sung by the band’s frontwoman Bernadette Lara AKA Carrie Abyss, accurately depict the depths experienced by the raging person losing her head again. Apathy runs as a constant, being the result of endless fighting and bitter losses, and it’s surrounded by sawing guitar melodies tearing through without much care anymore. A weight of transgenerational trauma pulls down her shoulders, and the signs and leaflets talking about “Inclusion” feel like a joke. Still, the warrior must carry on while growling, Nine Inch Nail inspired industrial sounds follow her footsteps.

The London-based project Carrie Abyss is Bernadette Lara on vocals, joined by Jonathan Adeyemi on drums, bassist Tibet Tunaboyu and guitarist Tunç Kuzay. Three of the members are from Istanbul and met in London, and now they’re regularly playing live shows as a dark post-punk band with industrial feel. Themes are of urgent nature and politically charged, discussing inequality, political oppression, misogyny and queerphobia among many other things wrong with their home country Turkey. Amidst all the chaos and destruction, Carrie Abyss gleams through with their fiery sound and fills the listeners’ hearts with determination to carry on despite all.
