Horsebread “Cant”

A large idea brewed in your mind and you went to try and do it. For whatever reason it’s not going nearly as well as it should to be deemed “successful”. Horsebread’s newest single “Cant” follows the footsteps of such a person now having to explain this deemed failure to others. As such, “Cant” opens a window into the pained inner side of a creative not meeting expectations.

Wrapped in airy guitars and silvery vocals, “cant” strikes as a chilled acoustic folk song drenched in veiled emotions that capture immediately but take a little while to unravel fully. In the center place is the singing voice lining out thoughts on being seen as unsuccessful despite everything, and as the lyrics continue to be spilled out into the single’s misty atmosphere, the meaning of “cant” as a phrase starts to become clear.

Used to describe a self-righteous and hypocritical way of speech, something like religious speeches, “cant” is applied as an emotion into the mix of troubling feelings a creative person doubting their passion experiences. Seeing others that used to support and believe in them no longer having the excitement, the uncomfortable feeling of disappointment takes place. If no-one believes in them, is there any point to carry on?

Horsebread, named after a means of survival considered low quality and worthless at the time and now a sought after food item, is a two-headed band from Nashville. It’s ran by producer-singer-guitarist Sam McLeod and Andrew Frazier, who plays bass and keys. The duo have been making music since childhood and formed Horsebread quite recently, in 2023, to make soulful indie filled with equal measure of emotion and musical creativity.
