A new name in the instrumental math rock realm has popped up recently, and it’s a duo called Comprehending. They have just released their second single from their upcoming debut LP. The song, titled “A Sense of Hope”, speaks of a creative struggling to keep their path amidst the doubts and second guesses. Despite all adversaries, it’s a melody for determination and, in the end, success.

Living on a sense of hope means trying to balance on the rocking log between doubt and determination. In the song, they’re represented by the melancholic undertone and the speedy nature of melody runs, respectively. Visually speaking, it’s the song of a new big skill to be learned, a project to begin, and it’s run by equal measures of fear, but also optimism.
As an instrumental song, the usual vocal part is replaced by highly adept electric guitar play, which runs throughout the song. As swiftly as the notes fly, so does the mood between the “yes, I can do it!” and endless what-ifs. The shifts are given a solid ground by the moody bassline, and energized by a particularly driving drumbeat, which gives the track a flying feel.
Based in Uppsala, Comprehending is a two-piece instrumental band exploring math rock and post-rock sound. In addition to being inspired by bands like Delta Sleep and Via Luna, most of the influences come from nature, which inspires everything from song titles to cover art.

Originally born as a bedroom rock project led by John Pettersson, who released a slew of singles and performed live under the alias, he was soon joined by Andreas Valdna on drums. Currently, the band is working on releasing their debut full-length album “The Perils and Rewards of An Unknown Path”.
