Canadian alternative rock darlings Crones are gearing up for the release of their third studio album, Human Error, and they are definitely going all in with it. The ten-track record comes just shy away from two years after their magnificent Laugh Freely, Laugh Often EP in late 2022 and it shows the band expanding on sonics and thematics first explored on those four songs.

The soundscapes painted by Crones ever since they started out have been getting more and more intricate and complex with time, shown by the ever-growing 70s glam rock influences being intertwined with DIY punk attitude and crystalline melodic musings. Human Error stands tall as a fine example of a band at their prime, taking their inspirations and making them even broader this time around.
“The band went in the studio with the intent to record 10 songs but the sessions went so smoothly that they were able to lay down 14 which allowed for the band to pick the songs which would best form the album.” Crones
Those tendencies could already be felt on lead single “Arsenic” and its psychedelic music video, a certified banger that successfully blends Crones’s desert rock leanings with full-blown art punk melodies. The song shows the British Columbia-based act stepping in with guns ablazing and holding nothing back, as they sing about “contemplating the relentless grip of the past on the future”. And it’s placed as the album opener as well, so even from the very first seconds you already know what you’ll get.
From then on, the band stacks layers upon layers of sonic diversity on top of each other creating dynamic atmospheres that further cement their creativity. There is a certain psychedelic underthread that unravels itself across the entire record and it keeps the high levels of energy even more captivating. The absolute standout “Dirt” (due out September 06th with an accompanying video) shows the band crossing the line between the hard rock inspirations of Mötorhead to the irreverent punk fun of The B-52’s in a hard-hitting, past-paced killer of a track that ain’t made for the faint of heart.

Across the track list, the band also pulls off acid soul influences and mellow guitar riffs on second single “Vegas Years”. Backed by a surrealist and thought-provoking video filled with galactic imagery, the song sounds different than anything ever released by the band up until now. Their willingness to change lanes and constantly try new sounds makes for a thrilling ride, be it the epic classic rock melodies on “Disemboweled Palomino” (this is the new single selected by the band on the album’s release day), or the Sunny Day Real Estate-like emo contemplations of album closer “Insects Always Die Young”.
Vegas Years was recorded at the sessions for the band’s previous release, the EP Laugh Freely, Laugh Often, but as it didn’t fit the more garage/punk leanings of that project was held back for the Human Error album.” Crones
Human Error settles itself as the most uncompromising, diverse and challenging Crones project so far. It is an unhinged and breathtaking journey of an album, proving that the band is at its absolute peak as they blur the lines between introspective and in-your-face antics. Standing somewhere between Les Savy Fav and Kyuss, Crones made a collection of songs that beam with energy, inventiveness and feels progressive, forward-thinking and unmatched in every possible sense. An album like this one definitely does not come by often and it needs to be cherished and appreciated in only one way: LOUD.
