British band Mark Vennis & Different Place just released their stellar third album Small Town Vampire a few months back, but they’re not stopping soon and have just returned with a brand-new track and sound. “In These Times…” is a track that feels like a complete 180 for the group, who comes back harsher and more aggressive than the new wave/power pop musings on the last album.

Heavily influenced by acts like Gang of Four and The Clash (especially the highly experimental Sandinista!), “In These Times…” shows the band taking yet another bold step. The indie punk that made up the core of their sonics is still very much present, but this ime interwoven with darker guitar riffs, psychedelic nods and propulsive post-punk drum patterns.

Serving as the lead single for their upcoming five-track EP Sunrise, due to next November, “In These Times…” continues to show the band has a very cinematic and dynamic way of constructing their lyrics and atmosphere. Written by frontman Mark Vennis, the lyrical content of the song follows the hardships and tough decisions we have to make on our daily lives just to stay afloat. It’s a very poignant and universally relatable feeling being brought up, especially given that sometimes those impossible decisions lead us to a safe haven of calmness – but we know it won’t last long.

Interestingly, “In These Times…” is backed by a remix of itself titled “Sure Ain’t No Crime” which shows us the same song in a more new wave and modern setting. The addition of electronics and vocal effects on “Sure Ain’t No Crime” com as a way of toning down the darkness of the lyrics a little bit, and it creates a uniquely different experience. Comparing the two production styles is fascinating, as both tracks seem to resonate with the band completely and their new direction going forward from here could go either way.

On “In These Times…”, Mark Vennis and his band dove into a new territory that isn’t entirely unfamiliar to them, as their indie and post-punk brand often incorporated experiments within itself and other genres. Nonetheless, as the band runs through a new direction of style and tone, they also present novelty and shows a knack for taking creative turns. It’s a very exciting time for them, and therefore it us for us also.
