Toby TomTom’s change of pace and stylings on the lovelorn beautiful ballad “I Need a Yoko”

American artist and musician Toby TomTom is back with his second new single of the year, “I Need a Yoko”. Ever since 2018, Toby has charmed audiences and critics with his energetic alt-pop that borrows heavily from other genres such as indie folk, hip-hop, jazz and oldfashioned rock and roll. On his new track, the Long Island-based singer goes the subtle route and delivers an acoustic ballad centered mostly on just voice and guitar – something that is new to HIM AND made him hesitant at first.

“I always feared the vulnerability of stripping down my musical arrangements to voice and guitar”, the artist himself says. But unbeknownst to him at time of recording, this gentler approach truly comes as a benefit. His voice is filled with raw emotion and even cracks at times, contributing to the creation of an atmosphere that revolves around longing for a deep connection with someone.

Toby TomTom took inspiration from the legendary love affair between iconic musicians John Lennon and Yoko Ono, with tender lyrics that are still packed with Beatles references. And yet, “I Need a Yoko” actually shines as a lovelorn ballad on its own merit, exploring the difficulties in connecting with another person and going through feelings of isolation and fear that it will never happen. It is incredibly raw and intimate, setting details of an important and delicate time in the artist’s life that wanders alongside the line between hopelessness and hopefulness.

“I need a Yoko…in her auburn shades…stand by me…show the world, the kind
of love we’re in,”

Its production, quiet and somber, crafts a fully-formed landscape of dreaminess and ethereal musings – this is a song about introspective reflection, not any kind of reinvention of sound. It’s simple but extremely effective, as Toby’s vocals portray conflicting emotions and quiver with genuine feelings of having so much love and caring and no one (and nowhere) to put it.

“I Need a Yoko” represents a new turn of the artist, who seems to have perfected those delicate lines and stylings on his very first attempt at it. Toby is an explosive artist whose work is always brimming with energetic and compelling dynamism, going for cinematic-big melodies and large productions. This emotional and raw ballad is something new for Toby, who manages to shine through his vulnerability and deliver a brand-new perspective to his artistry. His work in electronics and pop is so fun and such a blast, but after “I Need a Yoko” I do hope we get more from this side of him as this single is definitive proof that he can do it all too well.
