Chrysalis is centered around the concept of a cosmic elevator taking multiple stops, each unravelling a new facet of the human experience. Exploring several different directions, often at once, Plasma Chasms created a tightly knit adventure marked by soundwaves that make up for a very interesting listen. We’ve covered their past singles that ranged from the thoughtful and mournful ballad “Already Waiting” to the explosive and fun “Interstellar Baby“, and those were only a scratch to the surface.

Sonically and emotionally complex, Plasma Chasms’s debut gleams with creativity as the duo navigates the intricacies of the human condition. Across the thirteen tracks that compose the album, we travel through garage rock inspired distorted guitars and haunting pop landscapes in what can only be described as a true odyssey. The way Adrian and Jane manage to juxtapose disparate production styles and moods to create a cohesive body of work is jaw dropping.

Their poetic lyricism is completely on point, and that can be felt as soon as you get the album title: “What should we do in the in-between time, when one chapter of our lives or work has ended and the next has not yet come into being? This is the Chrysalis, in between being a caterpillar and becoming a butterfly. This is the stage of old things giving way, the stage of goopy mess, of being neither caterpillar nor butterfly. It’s the time of being something in an undefined, transitional state.” That concept is a fascinating one, especially when applied to the cosmic intergalactic trip that spreads itself as the core of the record.

Even when assisted by grandiose space rock and maximalist psychedelic production, the journey that Plasma Chasms guides us through is still a very intimate, subjective and personal one. That can be felt on the stunning dream pop aspirations of “Hourglass” as well as the somewhat acoustic leanings of “Just for You”, one of the emotional highlights of Chrysalis.

There is an intrinsic sense of hopefulness that permeates the album, that settles itself in a safe space of imagination backed by an intimate analysis of what makes human life and emotions so complex. The duo made a wonderful job in exploring this transitional state through the stops of the cosmic elevator and turning it into a world of possibility and wonder. When nothing is set in stone, everything can be done.
