The Przmatics bring a ray of light for those in the dark hurting with new LP “The Hope & The Hurt”

The Przmatics band members

this is a perfect day to find some new tunes for your weekend playlists. For instance, a Chicago-based band The Przmatics have just recently dropped a whole album, which has turned out to be a glorious collection of music for the hopeless and the stuck. Titled “The Hope & the Hurt”, the record dives deep into the struggles and small victories of love, and the damned state of the world we live in. All served in a refreshing mix of indie rock and r&b.

As expected from such a combo of genres, The Przmatics have a whole bunch of emotion to unleash. The way they’ve done it on the record however will still blow the cap off all expectations. Underneath the relatively uncommon marriage between indie rock and R&B spiced up with soul and electronic elements, serious themes gain poetic lyrics sung with passion. Even the darkest times find a reason to keep going on with emotional vocals providing a comforting note of not being alone.

Themes discussed on this LP come together under the roof of finding a balance between the optimism and realism both in emotional terms, as well as finding one’s way through the world as it is. From the emotional turmoil known as love and relationships, to big and harrowing events taking place, the album with its 11 tracks goes through it all with you.

One part of what this LP wins at, is the decision to combine a variety of considerably different sounds to provide the mood in individual tracks. With a smooth glide the listener goes from the instrumental gaze into the dark looking for a glimmer of hope (When I’m Breaking (Rock of Ages)) to a swinging gospel-influenced warm tune finding self-confidence as a woman. Chillier indie rock of struggling with life “Don’t Give Up On Me” meet poetic jazz club moments “Find Love (Interlude)” and the album gets wrapped up with its title track giving one final warm and sincere overlook into the power of connection in this chaos of living.

About a year ago, The Przmatics went into the studio to for a day to get a few songs recorded to perhaps put together an EP. When they came back a few months later to do some overdubs, the two songwriters in the band Nü Moon and Mike Przygoda had each written a few more songs and thought they would start recording those if there was time at the end of the session. The folks at their label, Oakley Ave Records took notice and offered to make a full LP.

Now the band needed a few more songs to fill out the album. Reflecting on what they had already written and recorded, a theme was emerging of trying to balance optimism with the pains of life. Nü and Mike wrote some more songs and along with the other two members of the band, bassist Ausberto Acevedo and keyboardist Nick Gutierrez, they went back into the studio.

In the end, they had to cut some songs from the final album in order for everything to fit on each side of the vinyl! But the edits also helped reveal the themes and narratives of the album as a whole.

The Przmatics

In the era of fearing dystopian future and feeling nostalgic for past times, finding a healthy balancing dose of optimism and realism is not easy. The Przmatics may, however, make it just a little bit easier, while providing a good amount of heartfelt poetry in great immersive sound.
