Antoine Guigan takes a journey to the seas of turmoil in new EP “Sailors”

In the foamy sea of despair, a bunch of sailors are stuck in the waves. Antoine Guigan’s EP “Sailors” looks into the lives of those sorry men given a rough ride by life. Whether it be grief, loss of love, or losing a fight with the world, the men keep sailing this endless sea, and now each of them have a personal entry on the EP at hand.

Born out of love and employing DIY approach in music production, Antoine Guigan’s fresh EP is home to 6 individual tracks, on all of which Antoine played all instruments and lent his voice to the sailors. As the characters go between dark emotions contrasted with the bright world, they’re too blind to see, the EP forms a continuing story where each of the songs becomes a chapter telling a part of this whole theme of men failing themselves and those around them.

The starting point lands right in the eye of a storm, into the life of a man, who has lost everything, including himself. His sorrowful state of Jesus complex and being doomed to die alone is accompanied by poignant, illustrative brass notes. “Diane” is a different state of eternal gloom, this time one of a man grieving the loss of a girl, who left him. Unable to move on from the haunting state of grief, he dreams of meeting her again in a kingdom by the sea, an Edgar Allan Poe reference.

The title track comes with poorly hidden melodrama in the thoughts of a man, who feels the world, other people specifically, is against him. While this song prefers to sail off in the solo glory of the misunderstood self and fight the proverbial waves on his own, the next song, “Shitty Pants Dave” takes the fight against the world to a whole new level. But as much as the situation blew out of hand (no pun intended), it was still all in his head.

In the solitary journey, no man is ever truly alone. When it comes to events happening in “Le Baron”, however, the unexpected company turns out to be Baron Samedi, a Iwa (spirit) of the dead. This could mean one thing only for the street-wandering sailor. The EP ends with a bittersweet song from the viewpoint of the sailor’s wife. In the slowly swaying melodies, she still watches the approaching sails, even if deep down she knows his soul is now somewhere in the seawaves. Now an old silver-haired woman, her life is solitary, but in the end they will meet again. In the afterlife.

Charles Eric Charrier convinced me that I should write my own music one year ago. I knew how to sing but had no musical knowledge at the time, which made the whole idea seem quite unrealistic. After a large number of sleepless night and the support of many musicians online and offline, I made a record that I felt I could be proud of. The sailors referenced in the title si a metaphor for most men: self-centered, hectic and not caring enough about others. The EP ends with the same story, voiced by a woman.

Antoine Guigan

Antoine Guigan is a French solo artist, whose eclectic taste in music and a love for DIY lends for authentic storyteller sound. On this EP, Antoine was accompanied by synths and a little production help from Charles Eric Charrier, and the result is something to echo in its bold yet vulnerable state.
