Spirit Gun is a power trio from Norfolk, Virginia, and they are about to share their latest EP The Status Quo Must Go!. This is their first new music since 2022, and it packes one hell of a punch that picks up from where their The Antonym EP left off.

Filled to the brim with unabashed punk attitude and an impeccable sense of melody that only challenges their own urgency, Spirit Gun’s new EP is a work unlike most. As usual, Spirit Gun makes the holy trinity of rock and roll – guitar, bass and drums – their weapon of choice and come out swinging, armed to their teeth with political lyrics and a very clear point of view. Centered around the idea of protesting against the way things are, the American trio came up with a style that is entirely their own and it’s magical.
Changing lanes from grunge to desert rock to alternative indie faster than a speeding car fleeing the police, Spirit Gun’s music sounds richer and more dynamic than ever before. The energy that is present all throughout the EP is truly off the charts – there is a wonderful pacing to the record, that features seamlessly woven instrumental interludes that really show the band’s creativity and wit, making them just as important as their critical lyrics.
“We look at it as a protest album. We are protesting the Status Quo, in whatever form it takes. The Status Quo that we are protesting might be different from the one you are protesting, and we wanted to give everyone a place for their voice to be heard!”, the band says about the EP, and this can even be seen on the artwork.
Featuring a collage of their fans holding up homemade signs, The Status Quo Must Go! is a record that revitalizes the political aspects of rock music and does it with endless energy. The very same fiery and relentless want for change is illustrated in the lyric video for the single “Stand 4 Nothing”, spreading the message even further.
The Status Quo Must Go! is a prime exemple of artistic growth as well, given that the band sounds much more focused here than on their previous EPs. One step in the right direction, Spirit Gun channels their anger and frustration into an actual passionate call for change that might just as well work even if it is on thrive and motivation alone.
