American singer and songwriter Brianna “Bri” Scully released her debut EP MANIC last year, after a string of singles. Now, the Los Angeles-based artist is back with “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl”, a solid track that sparks with indie sensibility and catchy pop hooks. On her first new song of the year, Bri Scully reveals herself as a seasoned artist, beaming with confidence and sounding like anything but a newcomer.
Bri only started to share her music after the pandemic hit, when she moved back in with her parents in Florida and took a different approach. Now, she’s fully in it and joined forces with producer Brandon Lew, who’s helped her improve and hone her craft. What came out on the other end is Bri Scully as a fully formed artist with a fresh perspective that really couldn’t come from anyone else. Her songwriting finds itself deeply rooted in an introspective lyricism and self-reflection, and her insight always comes from a place of candid emotions.
“I hope my listeners feel seen and heard through my songs. Nothing makes me feel more proud of what I have made than when people reach out to me and share their stories and tell me how my music has helped them.” Bri Scully
Taking inspiration from artists such as HAIM and Holly Humberstone, Bri delivers on “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl” a saccharine pop that impresses with its charm and personality. Her latest offering is a song in which Bri narrates the difficulties and struggles she’s faced while navigating dating life in LA, and her new single was born out of frustration with everything. It’s a light and breezy pop number, filled with crystalline guitar riffs and a lovely atmosphere of keys and synths that just feel like summer itself. She’s never sounded this big before, and it comes very organically.

Both the production and her vocals on the latest track sound and feel more polished, but for Bri it’s all about the songwriting. “My main focus when I write is maintaining strong lyricism. It is most important to me to remain brutally honest, even if it may be painful sometimes. My music touches on topics that can often be difficult to discuss, but my goal is to use music as a way to heal”, she says.
But there is a lot of good fun and humor in her songs too, as she seems to have found a perfect balance between it all. Expertly combining big pop moves with indie structures and impeccable melodies that create their own world and gently invite you in, “Don’t Wanna Be Your Girl” is the moment in which Bri is ready to take on the world for good.
