2nd Brightest Object presents their new beautiful EP “Emergent Signals”

2ND BRIGHTEST OBJECT ARTICLE COVER

Some of the brightest things come from the depths of darkness. Such is the case of the new EP “Emergent Signals” by Denver-based indie rock ACT 2nd Brightest Object aka 2BO. This release sees AIMÉE taking some of the most minute thoughts shadowing the inner world, putting them into poetic, vibrant and thoughtfully crafted music.

When it comes to spreading light into dark, 2nd Brightest Object is a reference to the moon. When coexisting with the sun, its presence is noticed only when you look in the sky, but when the sun is gone and you’re succumbed to the dark, the moon illuminates the path home (or away from home, as you please).

It’s within the dark, where one feels the most exposed and vulnerable to the thoughts that know no such thing as resting time. It’s the time, when the fleeting nature of love has left the person long for its return, or they’re worrying even more about someone they care about. Or there are fiery arguments with no clear aim for resolution or anything. “Emergent Signals” looks into those (and more) moments, not for answers, but to find beauty of solace in times of loneliness. And through that, the EP gains strength to withstand the dark emotional times that hit us all when least expected.

Among the explored themes, there’s “Catch Me” singing darkly of fleeting beauty that can’t be captured. In the song it’s a fox running much faster than the hounds. For us it’s the unattainable beauty standards that only a lucky few with good genes can achieve. Yet the chase is ongoing through the woods. And then there’s a dreamy “It’s Been a While”, which sees a lot of motion happening as life happens. What the song is really looking for, is happiness in the face of a beloved person. That’s the place lacking all that motion, and one in need of that the most.

The strength comes through buildup of electric guitars, synths, drums and the sweet soft voice of Aimée, the mastermind behind the 2nd Brightest Object alias. Genre-wise, the mystery-veiled indie-rock sound runs through 80s and 90s influences and picks inspiration from the likes of Blondie and The Go-Gos. Most importantly, though, there’s a strong connection to the moon and its fairly magical presence, which gives the artist and the EP an intimate, powerful and soothing sense of solace.
