Fronted by Cameron Owens, american band Eastern Pine released their debut EP, simply titled extended.play, and they arrived with an absolute blast. Rooted in 90s emo and punk, the soundscapes navigated by the band on their debut follow the same pathway carved by The GET-UP Kids and Fugazi, instantly creating an atmosphere of nostalgia that is wonderfully angsty.

The Pennsylvania-based act Eastern Pine delivered a fully formed sound with a crystal-clear vision that cuts through like a knife. It all started when Cameron and guitarist Colin started writing together in early 2023, after having known each other for years. Both musicians were a part of the hardcore/emo scene, but never in the same project at that point. Soon after the first few songs, they knew they were onto something special but were still missing a rhythm section. That was when drummer Chris became associated with Earnest Pine and brought along bassist Mike, and the rest is history.
“(The EP) is our attempt at taking all these influences and inspiration from bands that came before us and crafting that sound into something all our own, a sound that’s honest to who we are. We want to stay true to our roots and scene we cut our teeth in while still blazing a trail of our own sonically”, Cameron himself says about the record.
Across seven tracks Eastern Pine dives deep full throttle in the emo scene, delivering intricate guitar riffs, and melodies and passionate vocals that range from soft to guttural screams. extended.play is a record that salvages the Midwest emo heyday, exploring elements of math rock and hardcore with ease.
On their debut EP, the band deals with real and raw human experiences, always wearing their hearts on their sleeves. Their emotional approach to both music and lyrics is equal parts thrilling and comforting, as they explore sentiments of frustration, confusion and angst – but also joy and pride. Lead singer Cameron acts as the driving force behind the band’s strength, and he does it in a way that would make Chris Simpson proud.

Their firmly set aesthetic doesn’t waver not even once, recreating the characteristics of the midwest emo scene with surgical precision. This is especially true on opener “Intro/From the Sea” one of the EP’s obvious highlights. With metaphorical lyricism that takes excellent turns into the realm of tortured poetry, the track is a retelling of the greek myth of Icarus as told through emo-colored lenses and it works impressively well.
“Talks”, the lead single that was released just a week before the full project, is another noteworthy track that deals with the aftermath of a panic attack. Written from the perspective of a loved one, “Talks” is a poweful song that manages to shine with a hopeful message of genuine care and affection.
The most notable aspect of this EP is, actually, the commitment to detail. Eastern Pine does an incredible job in staying true to the scene and bringing it to 2024 completely unaltered. It finds a dramatic and exhilarating balance between the angst and the hopefulness, unafraid of exposing vulnerability and emotions in any way. It’s only their first release, but it can already be considered a classic in the same way as The Power of Failing and Something to Write Home About – and that is quite an accomplishment.
