Drawing inspiration from post-punk classics both old and new, German singer and songwriter Mote returns with “Torn of Wind”. It’s his first new track since last year’s amazing “Diamond Days” and it shows the artist expanding upon his NEW-WAVE tendencies with maturity and serenity. Mote this time leaves the glistening synths of “Hello Divine” a little to the side, focusing on shimmering guitar riffs and an urgent drumming that serves as the perfect backdrop for his melodic delivery.
On his guitar-centric new single, the Berlin-based artist deals with important themes of self-discovery and acceptance as he places himself as a “dark figure navigating their emotions and desires”. It’s a propulsive track that pushes you further, creating intricate atmospheres filled with riffs that could make Daniel Kessler proud. “Torn of Wind” was recorded at the legendary Animal Farm Studios in London, and Mote made sure to infuse the single with the city’s energetic and vibrant life. It’s an infectious tune that makes an excellent use of its own twists and turns, making way for a dynamic and ever-interesting production style.
“Torn of Wind” marks a new direction for the artist, who cites Joy Division and David Bowie as influences on both sound and structure. “Bowie is an influence because of the way he would tell the story of a character through his work“, the artist comments after praising Joy Division’s musical palette and simplicity as key ingredients to his new sound. These changes are also reflected on Mote’s decision to release the single on his own – marking it the first time in over two years in which he’s done it without any label.
It makes sense, given the deeply personal nature of the track. “I feel like I’m letting the world see me for real for the first time. ‘Torn of Wind’ is a glimpse of my dark side, which for me is a scary and exhilarating feeling“, the artist says about the new song. And yet, these stylistic and bureaucratic changes come from a place of honesty and truth, as Mote walks a pathway of genuine artistic freedom. He’s never sounded this rough before, and also never better.
There may be a certain darkness that surrounds “Torn of Wind”, but ultimately, it’s a song with deeply embedded feelings of hope. Expertly crafting a compelling narrative in which the main character “keeps waking up everyday, against all odds” and coming to terms with who they are and what they want, the track leaves you with a somewhat comforting feeling of resiliance and empathy.
It’s a complex emotional journey, and one that Mote rummages through very well. His new directions and sounds are very much welcomed; this is a fascinating track coming from Mote and it does an incredible job in keeping you waiting for more, waiting to see what else he’ll do next on this newfound realm.
