British musician Jonny Herman just shared his debut EP Old Romantics, a lovely compilation of the singles he’s been releasing since May plus brand new songs. The EP stands as Jonny’s first proper introduction, showing his range and creativity in the alternative rock scene with hints of folk and soulful vocals.

Following his take on romance featured on “Oriana“, the Old Romantics EP showcases the musician’s ability to tackle different themes with careful optimism and a fresh perspective. Across the tracks, Jonny shares thoughts and melodies regarding love and nostalgia, as well as modern life issues such as neoliberalism and the media’s influence on our lives. Everything is done in an incredibly tasteful manner, highlighting his songwriting and narrative skills while still pushing himself into new sonic territories.
The making of the EP shows the UK artist experimenting with a slightly different approach than the DIY-focused musings of his earlier work. Having collaborated with musicians Will Herman and Matthew Ward, as well as a more hands-on cooperation from producer Bob Cooper and mixing engineer Grant Berry, the sounds heard on the EP show a richer and more detailed ambiance that suits Jonny’s music incredibly well.
Old Romantics sounds like the work of an artist who’s really found himself, bringing forth thoughtful lyricism and lush instrumentations very organically. His reaching for a new and unique vision of the chamber pop sound really pays off, as Jonny embodies confidence like never before. The tracks paint a beautiful soundscape of romanticism that shines through like a bean of sunlight: bringing warmth and coziness, filled with empathy and positive energy.
Jonny started his music career as a drummer for several prior projects, and the carefulness of the percussion on his own solo work can be felt all throughout the EP. This sounds even more true on “Picture Book”, one new track and EP highlight. The track features gorgeous American-inspired guitars and pianos that are guided through by soft drumming, crafting an atmosphere that feels immersive and caring. The UK-based artist mentions that the EP was influenced by the likes of Weyes Blood and Father John Misty, as well as Arctic Monkeys, and all of it can be observed on the way Jonny weaves his melodies and vocal harmonies.
Old Romantics stands as an EP full of interesting sounds and production choices, feeling like an artist who’s found is own style but still looks for ways of improving it. Its gentle nature gleams as the work roots itself on a fine line between the optimistic and the realistic points of view.
