Mara Sol unveils her sophomore album “Permanent Recovery”

On 4th of October, singer-songwriter Mara Sol released the second full-length album of hers, a personal yet highly relatable “Permanent Recovery”. In this release, stories delving into the complexities of human relationships take place, concentrating on recognizing trauma from the past, suffering from loss, as well as recovery and moving forward fully healed and wiser.

In this haunting and beautiful release, 5 songs each one sharing a different story, are connected with short instrumental snippets. While the debut release spoke more about romantic relationships, Mara Sol wrote this one while exploring who we are as human beings and the different types of relationships in our lives. Thus, the album covers relationships of friends, siblings and between children and their parents, as well as trauma, complex nature of relationships and healing through therapy.

As one of the instrumental transitions says, “we are but layers of moments”. This snippet speaks of, for instance, how difficult it is to find the roots of trauma, and how feelings we have are hard to put into words that really do speak everything we feel. “Permanent Recovery” acknowledges this through the song titled “To Be Whole”, a story of strained sibling relationship, a sibling’s death and trying to not get stuck in grief and past trauma.

Another big topic that can be very painful, is addiction. This album starts off with “Other Side”, a song about a loved person struggling with addiction sung through the lens of a caring friend, who wants to do more, but ultimately knows the best thing to do is be there for them. Love and loss are also present in friendships, as shown by “Flowers” presenting three different friendships happening in different stages of life, to each a specific flower has been attributed.

There’s still space for romantic relationships on this record. “Dreaming to Feel You” is not a usual song of romance, however – it was born as an exercise to imagine living without the significant other. Thus, it’s a song about appreciating what you have in life. And last, but definitely not least, is the hope and resilience depicted in “Still Breathing”. This one stands as a monument for still hanging on despite all troubles, and keeping a positive outlook on life.

All of those stories are presented by Mara Sol’s poetic lyricism and her emotive, caressing voice bringing all described emotions to life. The main songs are really warm-hearted, surrounded by charming acoustic folk tinted with a little bit of rock for added energy, while the transitions stay true to the fleeting nature of moments, like little photographs left behind.

For Mara Sol, the creation of this release was a healing journey, and she wishes to help others navigate their hardships and connect with listeners through the stories on the album. In the times of need, Mara Sol’s music takes the form of a sunny sheen through the blinds. Friendships and relationships are almost never easy, but that’s alright – people that stick around make life worth the trouble.
