Led by musician Dave Hulegaard, american alternative rock act Twelve Days in June is back with Hiraeth, their latest full lenght studio album and follow up to last year’s La Luna. On Hiraeth, Dave embraces the 90s rock sound masterfully and delivered a record that is drenched in nostalgia and incrediby appealing atmospheres that encompass a wide variety of sonical influences.

Dave himself describes the band as his way of keeping in touch with the past and the music he grew up on. “Most of my favorite bands had either broken up or had drastically changed their sound and I was sad about it. With the millennium on the horizon, I wasn’t ready to leave the 90s behind and Twelve Days in June was my way of keeping them alive. I guess that’s still true today”, the artist says about the project and channels a very common and universal sentiment.

That can be felt even in its title Hiraeth. The word, of Celtic origin, is an old english term that can be defined as “deep longing for something, especially one’s home” and it fits the sonic landscape of the album very well. The new record is their most ambitious to date, being produced by Ben Hirschfield whose credits include Against Me! and The Story So Far, and unravel as a mid-90s nostalgic trip staying true to the aesthetics of the time and bringing it all back to late-2024 with mindful ease.

Hiraeth stands as a deep dive through an entire decade of music at once, as Dave paints a beautiful and vivid picture of the 90s sound and goes through every facet of it. He names The Smashing Pumpkins, Swervedriver and The Lemonheads as some of his key influences and navigates the unmistakably distorted guitars like a captain steering his ship.

Dave’s lyricism stays on point, dealing with topics such as grief, isolation, nihilism, and mortality “like one long therapy session” – and that is exactly what we get. Even with dark and heavy themes, the record builds a space for everything to exist in that feels comforting – maybe not always easy, but it’s a safe place for these philosophical musings to take place.

Twelve Days in June incorporates elements ranging from grunge to shoegaze, bending 90s alt-rock to their will as they create walls of sound that feel like they’re 60 feet tall and rising. There is a haunting atmosphere that surrounds Hiraeth, not entirely unique, like the feeling of hearing the first chords of “Fade Into You” in the soundtrack of a horror movie. It works because there is a certain familiarity to it amidst the possible danger, and that is the experience that Dave masterfully curated on this album.

This is a very personal project, driven by Dave’s passionate force of making the type of music he likes to hear. “[…] Twelve Days in June has always been my desire to make the type of music I loved growing up”, the artist admits before continuing: “Hiraeth is a record that fills a gap in my personal music collection.” And that passion is what makes the record so intrinsic relatable with its very distinct sound. Dave stretches the fabric of 90s alternative music to its utmost extremes, creating a record that has been described by the musician as a “big and loud sonic juggernaut”.

On their fourth studio effort, Twelve Days in June came up with a record that is filled with melodic twists, hailing as an album that invites the listener to go through memories like a long-lost mixtape that was recently uncovered. Even through its distortion and heaviness, Hiraeth impresses with genuine sensitivity and vulnerable delivery. Twelve Days in June never sounded this intense before, and this works remarkably well in every single chord. Hiraeth is the record Dave had always been destined to make, and it arrives like a fully formed daydream: disorienting and somewhat ghastly; but beautiful, nonetheless.
