“This EP was the first time I felt ready to tell a story, and it was really cathartic, and quite reflective for me”, Sunset says about the project. The Melbourne-based artist continues to share that the past few years were hard, as she suffered with health complications after she caught long-COVID on the pandemic. “I forced myself to embrace a brighter outlook, to work hard and enjoy that process, and through it to ultimately love and accept myself right now as is”, she concludes recalling that was the sentiment behind the EP’s title and concept.
Beautifully produced by fellow Australian musician Spud Thompson, Love Kills the Monsters finds Sunset Salore stretching her unique type of indie pop into new and interesting directions. There is something very unusual in the way the arrangements and melodies are woven together, creating an atmosphere of freshness and modern pop with a delightful old-school flare. Across the seven tracks, Sunset takes us on a journey through the whimsical, crafting stories that feel compelling and thoughtful.
From the stop-start melodies of her debut single “Call It” to the Carly Rae Jepsen musings on “Mystery and Magic”, Sunset Salore delivers a record that glistens with eclectic sounds and mindful lyricism. On Love Kills the Monsters we get a full sense of who Sunset is as an artist, drawing inspiration from personal life experiences and challenges faced along the way. Sunset’s showstopping vocals also deserve your attention as she exhibits a powerful control and a wide range that enriches the already great songs to heavenly stages.
Amongst the uniquely interesting highlights of the EP is the track “Feel”, which stands as the emotional centerpiece of the record. Filled with immaculate vocal performances and harmonies with lyrics rooted around getting in touch with your own feelings, the outstanding track is an impressive piece of music. Backed by dynamic changes in tempo, a cinematic ambiance and surgically inserted distorted guitar riffs, “Feel” is an immediate focal point and shines with authenticity.

Love Kills the Monsters documents the highs and lows of the singer’s life up until this point and does it with amazing sensitivity. There is intimacy even on its big pop sounds, as Sunset packs real and raw human emotions into every second of the record. A truly remarkable EP that foreshadows what is sure to be a very interesting and fruitful career for the artist, this EP is one you won’t want to miss.
