Sonomancer is a mysterious and fascinating artist who’s been making waves in the realm of instrumental electronic music for a few years now. Their latest release is the awe-inspiring single “Before Dawn”, an ambient piece that finds its thrilling melodies way closer to the pop sphere than ever before. Not much is known about Sonomancer other than they are currently based in Melbourne “but originally from Elsewhere”, and that anonimity contributes to the eerieness of their music.
“Before Dawn” is their first new song since 2022, and shows the artist straddling into new directions with their sound and doing it unlike anyone else. Heavily rooted in the concept of fragmented hope, the track glistens with pop sensibility and, at the same time, carefully crafts a desolating atmosphere and explores its vastness head-on with cautious optimism. Sonomancer has a unique musical palette, using elements from ambient, post-rock, and industrial with unbelievable balance, and commits to its concepts with body and soul.
Drawing inspiration from the ungodly hours of night right before the sun rises, “Before Dawn” is guided by a hopeful piano motif that shifts in and out of focus getting stronger and more urgent each time. Industrial drums and haunting melodies set the scene and transform it into a compelling and ultimately introspective journey toward self-reflection in the face of mystery. That period of the day/night is present across humanity’s legends and folklore as a magical time in which anything can happen and the conventional rules are suspended, leaving room for the unexplained. But Sonomancer finds hope in that time before sunlight or at least tries to.
“It’s a piece about finding strength in the broken moments, about holding on when hope feels like it could shatter at any moment”, the artist reflects. That concept is expanded further in the astonishing music video that goes along with the single. An introspective video that portrays otherworldly images of destruction happening all around human figures who try to hold on to reality, it serves as a stunning illustration of resilience in the face of adversity.
That is what guides Sonomancer’s “Before Dawn”, that feeling that things will be fine if we just wait a little longer for the storms to pass – and this is the artist providing shelter until that time comes.
