Madame Psychosis’s bold and dynamic reinvention on new album “MP3”

Madme Psychosis article cover

Canadian indie-rock quintet Madame Psychosis is about to release their latest project, their third studio album since debuting with a gorgeous self-titled back in 2017. The new album, gleefully titled MP3, stands as their most ambitious and nuanced record yet, one that captures a certain magic in the form of intricate soundwaves and SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS lyricism.

Madame Psychosis have been teasing the album with a string of singles ever since “Concrete Streets” in October 2023, a song that marked their first release in a post-pandemic world. On it, the band gave us a lovely taste of what they were aiming for in their new chapter: “Concrete Streets” is a track filled with energetic choruses and impeccable melodies that run through carefully placed guitar riffs and lyrics that come to remind you to take a break and a deep breath amidst the chaos of daily work life to prioritize our passions, loved ones and own mental health. From then on in, Madame Psychosis set the scene for what was to come, and they did not disappoint.

Combining wild mood swings, and several different influences both in sound and content, MP3 delivers a razor-sharp look at modern life’s most intimate struggles; the kind we tend to keep to ourselves. Alternating between narratives, strong storytelling and deep personal cuts, MP3 beams with openness and vulnerability – hell, “Vulnerability” is even one of the track titles and it’s the dreamiest soundscape on the record. Backed by immaculate production that constantly toys with aspects that range from hard rock chants to gritty introspective indie pop, Madame Psychosis built an experience that is rich in detail, emotion and honesty.

MP3 deals with hardships with an unwavering positivity, the hopefulness of their lyrics and on lead singer Michelle Mondesir’s delivery makes the album stand as a beacon of light shining through the darkest dark. Their feel-good and uplifting approach even on the most vulnerable songs creates an atmosphere of quiet confidence, bringing forth feelings of careful optimism that run through the whole album.

That newfound light, also reflected on the band’s sonic dynamism and ever-changing directions, can be traced back to more collaborative sessions with their longtime co-producer, Alex Gamble. The seasoned Toronto-based artist is a prolific producer and mixing engineer whose credits include acts like Alvvays, Fucked Up and Broken Social Scene amongst several others. The decision to bring him in creatively contributed to a deepened sound for Madame Psychosis, really highlighting their strengths as never before.

Across their third album, the also-Toronto-based quintet comes as a force of nature. This can be felt on openers “I’ll Go”/”Anywhere With You” and its larger-than-life choruses filled with cinematic and powerful performances rooted in authenticity, and also on slower ballads such as the Prince-inspired “Hopeless” with audacious lyrics about overcoming a heartbreak and diving into the freedom that comes with it. MP3 also packs several high-energy in-your-face punches, especially in the form of singles “Foxtail” and “Revolution”, tracks that respectively talk about embracing joy and urging for societal change.

MP3 is their boldest record so far, one that shows a band ready to take on the world by its thorns and never letting go. Mixing vulnerable lyrics with arena-ready anthems, Madame Psychosis truly outdid themselves on their third studio effort. Showcasing artistic growth and focused on overcoming adversities, the band came up with their strongest and most personal album yet. The world is their oyster, and they are ready to serve it.
