English indie rock act Citizens of YEAH!!! is the brainchild of Jonathan Womack and was born during lockdown out of Jonathan’s reawakened passion for making music. An active member of the British late-90s rock scene, Jonathan was influenced by The Smiths and Radiohead and has been releasing material under the Citizens of YEAH!!! moniker since last year and he is now gearing up for the release of his latest installment, the full-length album People’s Republic of YEAH!

Navigating through an alternative rock sound very reminiscent of the same late-90s scene he was once a part of, People’s Republic of YEAH! shows the musician truly honing his craft. The album highlights Jonathan’s knack for the melodic, toying around with interesting structures that stand as a remarkable revival of the 90s indie rock essence. Occasionally borrowing the loud-quiet-loud dynamics made famous by Pixies, Citizens of YEAH!!!’s music is a celebration of the lo-fi aesthetics made to perfection.

People’s Republic of YEAH! was preceded by the singles “3 Little Piggies” and “Kimberella”, already providing a taste of the album’s diverse sonic pathways. In fact, Jonathan himself admits that this album is more ambitious than his previous Thermonuclear Warmth from last year, just because now he’s a better and more confident producer. That feeling also is made present on its lyrical content, showcasing a myriad of different inspirations that somehow all work together as a cohesive unit.

The well-received “3 Little Piggies” stands as the album’s highlight with a gorgeous production that nods to 80s new wave and post-punk sounds, as the track retells the classic children’s story with some dark twists to it. Across the ten tracks that make up the album, we get to see Jonathan’s nerdiness blossom with songs inspired by Greek Mythology (“Orpheus and Eurydice”), prehistorical animals (“Kimberella”) as well as politically-driven critiques such as “God Is My Right” and “War Dogs”. Darwinian concepts of evolution also appear on “Survival of the Fittest”, and “Under a Lion’s Head” came as a result from a visit to a Monastery in Sierra Leone.

All of the themes approached by Jonathan on People’s Republic of YEAH! are neatly tied together by how cohesive and coherent the album’s sonic vocabulary is. The Ryton-based artist really shines as an alt rock producer, following the footsteps of Steve Albini and Gil Norton while still developing a style all of his own. Jonathan captures the raw essence of 90s indie rock at the same time that makes room of experimental musings such as horns and carefully placed synths, as a way of enriching the ambience and highlighting his personal pop sensibilities.

People’s Republic of YEAH! shows a very talented musician finally able to bring his vision to fruition, combining technical skill with colorful artistry. It’s a record that stands as both an homage to the vibrant music scene on which he got his start many years ago, as well as a key release on the current landscape of classic indie rock revivalism. On the latest record from Citizens of YEAH!!!, we see a masterful work that plays by no rules other than his own; as any exceptional DIY project should.
