After a string of increasingly fascinating singles and EPs that go as back as 2017, Norwegian band Ambrosius released this year their highly anticipated full-length debut. Pathways is a record that is filled with energetic melodies created from the mashing of an indie folk setting with punk DIY attitude. A genre-defiant piece of work that resonates with honesty and fun, Pathways is definitely a must-listen to fans of indie music.
Featuring interesting lyricism and pulling influences from traditional European folk, the debut album from Ambrosius unveils as a dynamic force of nature. With robust guitar riffs, fiddle lines and propulsive percussion, the band beams with the high-energy experimentations found on records by The Bianca Story, while taking things to the next level in a sound that feels uniquely their own. The record was backed by single and opener “Shadow Logic”, a track that instantly sets the tone and serves as a statement piece.
A propulsive tune that shows off the band’s knack for world building, “Shadow Logic” sets itself as an urgent kick off. Over the next eleven tracks, we are taken through a journey of different tempos and constructions and navigate themes like a tribute to radio theatre, misgivings and love both found and lost. Even through the urgency, there is a real sense of connection and intimacy that is woven throughout Pathways not entirely unlike the one on Bright Eyes’s classic I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning.

The quintet from Oslo marries straightforward fervor with compelling instrumental additions, crafting a production style that is is both pressing and inviting. All of that attitude and fiery delivery can be seen vividly on their live performances, such as the one of “Shadow Logic” that accompanied the album.

Pathways is a dazzling project, one that glistens with authenticity and unity every step of the way. From the drinking song “Open Tab”, that recalls imagery from the likes of Flogging Molly, to the americana-influenced “A Colm Sunset” and delicate ballad “Star’s Archive”, Ambrosius does a remarkable job in keeping all of their sounds and influences afloat. Pathways shine with admirable cohesion, narrated by a metaphorical storytelling that is embellished by its wide variety of tricks and a rich sound that is as thick as it is see-through.
Ambrosius released Pathways way back in January, and not even a year later the band is already scheduled to record their next effort in Germany in early 2025. The Oslo band is at their creative peak, bursting with energy and more than ready to have their own moment in the sun. But for now, Pathways stands as the full realisation of the potential they showed off on previous singles and EPs culminating into a true masterpiece. The future’s bright, and they’re ready for it.
