Back in 2021, English singer and songwriter Al Shalliker released his debut album Silver Linings, a gorgeous piece of indie folk. We highlighted the single “The Voyage” back then, and it’s lovely to see that Al is back with his sophomore effort. His second solo album, The Diamond Hill, shows the artist picking things up where Silver Linings left off and adding even more nuance, making it another beautiful indie folk album with heartfelt emotions and dynamic songwriting.

The Diamond Hill, much like Silver Linings did, impresses with its minimalistic approach to production and sound. Al Shalliker is the main character, creating remarkable melodies with his acoustic guitar that oscillate between razor-sharp urgency and delicate softness with elegance. He is accompanied just by bass guitar and harmonica, played by old friends, and with that simplicity he makes magic happen like very few could.
There is an atmosphere of intimacy that permeates the entire record, it’s so gentle and raw that it’s like Al himself is in the room with you playing the songs. The Diamond Hill unveils itself as a complex and intricate record that deals with convoluted themes of hope, the passing of time and memory with humour and grace. Across the thirteen tracks that make the album, Al guides us through many moods and cements himself as a terrific storyteller, be it on first single “Time Out of Mind” and its retrospective look on bad decisions or the gorgeous “Oh Felicity” inspired by Ireland and its scenery.
Al fills The Diamond Hill with vivid imagery and transforms small mundane details into full worlds of sight and sound that overflow with love and joy. This is his second album, but Al is not a beginner by far. As the frontman of alt-rock band Watershed, the Plymouth-based musician has experimented far and wide with genres, sounds, and stylings. That confidence acquired over twenty years of records and touring really shines through his solo work beautifully, crafting unique ambiances that bring forth bittersweet emotions.
Infused with vulnerability and kindness, this record reveals Al at his best, most open and inviting. As he glides through indie folk like a racer doing a victory lap, he knows that at the end of the day, everything is ephemeral and that is exactly what makes life so beautiful. The Diamond Hill is Al Shalliker condensing that ephemerality to its purest form, through delicate songwriting and laying it bare like an open book. And it’s a pleasure to read it.
