Indie rock band Delta of Venus finished the month of November in a charming, ethereal note with the release of double-single “Disengage b/w Slipping”. In the two songs, internal turmoil from rattled-up relationships is unravelled and explored through flowing vocals embedded in art rock soundscapes. Somewhere in the driving melodies, an answer is found.

Dreamy slow-paced music for the weary minds, that’s what “Disengage” is. Designed around a soul torn apart from a relationship, the emotional vocals of Issy carry the weight of what troubles her. She’s surrounded by a blend of shoegaze indie rock that weaves through the story a bit like an orchestral play with no expected choruses or solos. That part is owed to Ellery Twining, whose solo works often feature a captivating interplay between musical movements.
“Slipping” comes along with slightly warmer sounds, driven by a bass guitar melody and strummed guitar. This one dives deeper into droning shoegaze realms and switches between drumming patterns along with the flow of the story. Her introspective voice blends beautifully with the instrumental side, making for an evocative, slightly melancholic experience.
Delta of Venus is a band of three friends, including the familiar name Ellery Twining, who has released solo material earlier. The band formed in 1993 with each member playing an instrument they couldn’t play – the idea was that this way they couldn’t sound like anyone else. After an eventful few years of releasing music and playing live, the band went apart in 1997. Silence fell until now when Ellery brought them back together to make some new music. “Disengaged” and “Slipping” are the first songs written together once again, and the plan is to create a new full-length Delta of Venus album.
