Mark Vennis & Different Place explore the political landscape of modern Britain on new “Sunrise” EP

After the great album Small Town Vampire back in January, English singer and songwriter Mark Vennis and his band are back with brand new EP Sunrise. Made up of five songs, including a new version of their single “In These Times…” from earlier in October, the EP is a testament to Mark’s versatility as a songwriter and ability to mash together different influences as a musician.

Mark navigates through complex thoughts and political climates, and experiments with different productions styles and tempos at the same time. Sunrise carries on a much darker and heavier tone than their Small Town Vampire album, borrowing elements from another very politically-inclined legendary british band, The Clash. Especially on tracks like “A Song for Sunrise”, the EP’s opener, you can feel how well they weaved in that charged and immediate punk attitude with the britpop musings of Manic Street Preechers and the innovative indie rock seen on R.E.M. in the 80s. That intricate mixture of different places to pull their influences from sets the tone of Sunrise beautifully, exploding into a myriad of textures and details.

According to the band the EP reflects Britain’s turbulent times, exploring themes of frustration and hardship; but also resilience and hopefulness. Unbeknownst at the time, their last single “In These Times…” was already a taste of the EP and showed a darker atmosphere both in sound as well as on lyrics, and that is dealt with further on the rest of the EP. The track “Collapsing Buildings” dives into those feelings of frustration and powerlessness very deeply, filled with pounding drums that feel like a death march that accompanies a vocal delivery that gets urgent by the second.

Originally planned as a project that would be released on General Election Day in Britan, Sunrise is marked by a collective sentiment of impotence and disillusionment that sprawled across the nation. With a poignant and thought-provoking lyricism, Mark addresses the societal decay around him with conflicting feelings that also translate as universal perceptions. At the same time that those negative feelings are real and speak of pressing matters, Mark also ends the EP with holding on to the belief that change is possible. “Give me your hand, I’ll pull you up to solid ground“, he says on the hopeful EP second to last “Solid Ground”.

Mark Vennis & Different Place

Sunrise is a collection of songs that feel like a collective cry for a better and more worthy future. Mark and his band do an excellent job in serving as spokespeople for that change. The way they expose such dreadful and dark sentiments without them ever take away the hope is truly remarkable. On his very political new EP, Mark Vennis once again rose as an artist with a very clear point of view and, more importantly, an artist who knows how to convey said visions with empathy and precision.
