Laura Mock is an American singer and songwriter whose debut single “Landlocked” came out last year, allowing us to have a small taste of her music in the form of an aperitif before her debut EP. Now, home//body is finally here and showcases the artist expanding upon her lush soundscapes and creating an indie folk record with sparkling pop tendencies and one central boiling question: Where do I belong?

Laura Mock was born and raised in Maine before relocating to New York City and says that her upbringing was a crucial part of the inspiration behind the music. Creating a truly unique landscape that marries haunting atmospheres with dreamy vocals and gobsmacking vulnerability, Laura incorporates traditional New England folk sounds into her songwriting. That juxtaposition between the old and the new is a key element of home//body, serving both as the starting line as well as the goal you’re running towards.
Laura also mentions the struggles of getting this EP off the ground in the first place, talking about how it’s been in the works for many years. “I started writing it in my parent’s basement during the pandemic in 2020 and it was in production for over 2 years until it was ready, both because my producer and I care a lot about specifics and because we both work full time jobs elsewhere”, she says about the process of making the record.
“The project is entirely self-funded, and I kind of think it sucks that it has to work like that because finances I think are the biggest barrier to creative freedom. Despite that, we were able to make something I’m so, so proud of”, she concludes with optimism.
Following the footsteps of artists like Phoebe Bridgers and Anaïs Mitchell, Laura crafts masterfully detailed universes that feel as inhabited as they feel vast. The singer explores that vast emptiness like an open field full of potential and navigates through her vulnerability and sense of belonging with poignant delivery always looking for a place to call home.
The stunning opener “Arcadia” shines as the perfect example of that. The use of space in the production reproduces a feeling of isolation, which is only matched by the warmth of Laura’s crystalline vocals and sober pianos. It is an impeccable introduction to her artistry, glistening with comforting melodies that resonate with the deepest parts of your soul.

Laura has a very interesting approach to her songs, taking you on an amazingly dynamic joyride across its five songs. As she and her producer Jason Sill explore her poetic lyricism, they find new grounds for her melodies to stand on that range from country to indie pop as easily as one would turn on a lightswitch. Attempting to both ask and answer questions regarding her own sense of belonging on many different forms, Laura flows through the colourful sounds with natural ease taking us alongside her like a child showing a new friend her favourite toys and places.
A true statement of her versatility as an artist and singer, Laura wanders her own land with gleeful maturity. From the boygenius-like dynamism of “CTC” to the urgent strings of “Landlocked”, the artist creates a space that is inviting and comforting. Pondering about the relationships between “Home the Place, Home the People, and Home the Self”, Laura Mock finds her voice as the guiding star that leads her soaring self across the world at large and all its beauty.
Most of all home//body is a work that resonates with universal relatability evoking feelings of nostalgic yearning, creating compelling narratives centered around the search for identity and somewhere to safely land on. Even if said place hasn’t been found yet, Laura learns that the journey and the searching are worth growing for.
