On this release, four songs, two of them being a previously released single, line up to create a journey through SJ Denney’s influences and inspirations. While relatively small, the EP is bound to leave an impression with its sonic varieties ranging from African rhythms to the influences of Pink Floyd. Lyrically, there are themes with roots in the artist’s personal life, given a refined and picturesque body.

The EP starts off mellow with “Welcome Home”, a slow-paced melodic acoustic track with introspective thoughts and the ocarina, as well as an accompanying strings on the foreground and faint sounds of chatter and laughter far in the backdrop. It’s followed by a switch in mood and speed, as “Friends and Lovers” comes in the shape of afrobeat and features many influences of African music, in particular the rhythm.

Third tune and also a latest single release, is called “According to You”, a fairly poignant track driven by its indie folk. Inspired by troubled state of a relationship that ended up undoing itself completely, the song speaks heavy thoughts somewhere between longing and hope.

The EP ends with a two-part song “A Lucky Escape”, themed on escapism and change. This one is a two-parter mainly from influence of Pink Floyd, which has made S J Denney wish to create multi-part songs himself. This one plays out beautifully, as a conclusive story that brings the EP together.

For those wondering why the last track is so long… There is a hidden track, titled after the EP. This one’s a purely instrumental piece composed on a piano, a first attempt at creating a classical piece of music. A hidden surprise for the nostalgic and adorers of cinematic classical music.

“The secret track is also the title track. This was written on my mother-in-law’s piano and is my first attempt at composing a classical piece. What I heard in my head was a piece of music that could run over movie credits, with the movie being my life so far!” S J Denney

S J Denney, a singer-songwriter based in the UK, has been effectively married to music since boyhood when he was performing in various venues as a choir singer. He has also learned to play clarinet, but the budging songwriter led the artist to learn to play acoustic guitar and write his own songs. Now, S J Denney is a solo artist with a history of playing in bands, and his music often features uncommon instruments, in addition to beautifully crafted instrumentals and gentle vocals.
