You Bred Raptors is the experimental project from Massachusetts-based artist Corey Tilton, who’s been impressing audiences with his genre-defying electronics. Corey’s released some stand-alone singles and EPs since 2013, and for the past few years is really making a comeback and getting even more experimental with both subjects and sounds. “Telemarketer Terrorists” is the title track of his most recent EP, and it’s a song that packs several different ideas and executes them all brilliantly in just three minutes.

On “Telemarketer Terrorists” we see Corey leaning in towards non-traditional instrumentation progressions and cadences, as the singing is mostly done in spoken-word poetry fashion. This creates an atmosphere of somewhat uneasiness, that unveils as an incredibly effective world building with upbeat minimalism. The artist names the seminal indie act The Postal Service and its only masterpiece of an album as the major influence of his sound on “Telemarketer Terrorists”, and it definitely shows.
There are vintage analog synths, drum machines sending out simple beats that prove themselves as the backbone of the track and Corey’s lyricism deals with the inevitable realization that growing up is a hard process. Taking the form of an annoyed employee of a telemarketing company, our narrator really goes through an epic journey of self-reflection regarding the inevitable perception that things that you were told as a kid were nothing more than stories and tales with no deeper meaning. “Telemarketer Terrorists” features great storytelling, making it perhaps You Bred Raptors’s best song to date.

Corey constructs a song that defies most traditional conventions, leaning in on impressionist narratives that drive the story forward as an existentialist exercise. “Telemarketer Terrorists” is an exciting and thought-provoking experiment, folding in and out of itself as the synths become increasingly urgent to keep up with the melodies and story.
It’s a breathtaking track that cements Corey as a truly inventive and creative mind in indie music, playing around with electronics and seemingly unrelated ideas that get tied together with dubious conclusions. The compelling track is perhaps the most subdued one, on his discography this far. It shows that the musician isn’t afraid to try new angles on his music, offering a truly refreshing perspective unlike most pop-oriented experimental artists ever would dare.
