Maverick Smith is an alternative rock band from West Virginia, led by talented musician Sean Boynes. They released their fiery debut album With Friends & Imperfections last October and now return with a brand-new EP for the holidays. Simply titled Christmas, the three-track project aims to benefit the Harmony Health Foundation, a non-profit organization that focuses on expanding healthcare access to underserved communities.

“We didn’t just want to add a holiday release—we wanted to create something that feels personal and timeless”, says frontman Sean Boynes. “This EP is our way of celebrating the season and sharing that joy through music with a cause close to our hearts”. An incredibly noble cause and absolutely the right way to spread joy and hope! Adding to it all the fact that the music itself heard on the EP is really good, Christmas stands as a win for everyone involved.
Beautifully capturing the same raw authentic energy found on Maverick Smith’s debut album, Christmas EP is a remarkable job, of avoiding musical clichés usually associated with holiday music. It is lighter and more hopeful, featuring crystalline melodies and dynamic stylings, but it still stands as an alternative rock piece. Their new EP was created as a collaborative effort with several guest musicians that add their own flare to Maverick Smith’s grungy and distorted sound with ease without ever diminishing their identity.
Amongst such artists we have singer Caitlin Anselmo of Carousel Rogues, who takes on lead vocal duties on the two original tracks “Coal for Christmas” and “Kid at Christmas”, as well as the musicians Paul Santo and Dallas Dwight. All artists worked together to craft a Christmas EP that feels sparkling with glee and hope, spreading messages of love and joy in a singular and refreshing way that continues to celebrate and find beauty in the imperfections.
But what really takes the cake is their rendition of the classic tune “Jingle Bells”, featuring a pop punk production backed by the Dreams Strings Orchestra. It is a jaw-dropping cover, filled with dynamism and cinematic progressions that make an ages-old carrol feel fresh and unique.
