Across the eight tracks that compose the album, we see Mike gathering influences that range from glitch pop and IDM all the way to shoegaze and alternative rock. That creativity was already blooming back when Mono XL’s first singles “Where I Belong” and “Brown Eyes” were released, and on Haze Collector Mike expands upon his own sound even more. On his full-length debut, Mike bends electronics and textures to his will and finds a perfect middle ground between introspective expression and gentle lyricism.

Mono XL’s signature moves of blending big new wave synths with indietronica sensibility is highlighted even more by how immersive this album is. From the arpeggios on intimate opener “I Fall” to the explosive dancefloor-ready synth pop of “Seven Days”, every single sound is carefully sewn together with surgical precision getting more intricate by the second. It’s a very compelling approach that charms the listener with a sonic palette that oscillates between haunting and enchanting.
Entirely produced by Mike de Lis, alongside Piti Varela, the album shows the artist’s experimental side running wild and free with quiet confidence. Recorded in London, the album is rooted in personal experiences and invites the listener to join on an epic-like journey marked by artistic growth and innovative thinking. Haze Collector flows with exuberant beauty, constantly folding in and out of itself in waves of kind-hearted storytelling and cinematic imagery.

It’s a deeply emotional ride, to say the least. Dealing with themes of self-reflection and intimacy, Haze Collector offers a fresh and unique perspective of what electronic music can be. By merging 80s synths with 90s alternative rock’s distorted guitars and the intriguing glitchpop from early 2000s indie scene, Mono XL crafted a record that sounds unlike anything else.
It grasps your attention with its fascinating noises and paces itself brilliantly, going from slow-tempo ballads to Homeric conclusions and world-altering crescendos. Haze Collector leaves an ever-changing and long-lasting impression and stands as one of the most interesting debuts of the year.
