The BRITISH GERMAN collaboration act Psylhouette is back with their third full-album release, titled simply Psylhouette III. But there is nothing simple or even ordinary about the sound delivered by the duo. Blending in the atmospheric musings of dream pop with textured distortion guitars from shoegaze, Psylhouette reveals their new album as a multi-colored project tied together by their unique take on psychedelia.

III raises fully-formed walls of sound and gorgeous midtempo ambiance, with haunting melodies and eerie double-tracked vocals that feel oddly enchanting. The two artists, based on Berlin and Brighton, are experts of crafting thick layers of sound that glisten like beacons of light shrouded in darkness. On instant highlight “Everything Is Fine”, we see their new wave and krautrock leanings taking center stage and showcases the two artists as capable of bending soundwaves at their will as they shine with genuine wonder.
Their last effort, Psylhouette II, was released back in 2021 and already gave glimpses of their inventiveness production. This time around, the group takes everything that worked well for them in the past and runs wild with it, carefully mastering the art of noise like a sophisticated tricot pattern. Across the eight tracks that make up their third effort, the duo experiments with post-punk and alternative rock stylings without ever losing sight of their own identity. The end result is a breath-taking work, filled with so much detail and nuance that it can get overwhelming or a bit tricky to keep up.
But as they go along, every single piece falls into place perfectly. On III, the band continues to explore newly charted territories and create wonderful melodies that push themselves forward at the same time that they look backwards and stare right into their own legacy up until now. A captivating and fascinating evolution to their sonic vocabulary, Psylhouette soars through landscapes that are both devastating and hopeful managing to find beauty in all of them.
The decision of making their new album more electronic-based was a conscious one, as founder Tristan says. “Our first two albums are a mix of new wave, krautrock and shoegaze with mainly live drums, guitar etc., but this time round we’re a bit more electronic. The main reason behind this is the previous instrumentation meant we couldn’t play live with just the two of us, so we’re hoping this new format will allow us to break out of the studio and play some shows in 2025”, he concludes on the record’s newfound sound and aesthetic.

As the duo rummages through all possible outcomes of static and dynamic noise, the path behind them gleams and glistens with freshness. Tracks like “Don’t Know Where At All” delve deep into electronic realms of shoegaze, with melodies so inviting that you just could jump into them. On the other hand, they are also able to weave dense and guitar-focused thickness like on opener “Moonlight” that feels like the portrayal of a wicca ritual taking place right before your eyes.
That sense of magical mystery is found all throughout the record, and it’s a key element of its impact and impression to say the least. Channelling past lives and paying homage to those who came before them at the same time that they plunge into the unknown, Psylhouette made an album that fuses a punk-influenced attitude with electronic dreamscapes of weird and alluring refinement. It’s as elegant as it is raw, interwoven by intimacy and gentleness whilst leaving you spellbound and wonderstruck.
Psylhouette III marks a turning point for the band, who is finally ready for long-awaited recognition. Their third effort shows the duo intricately crafting sounds that feel connected to the ethereal and the eternal much like moonlight itself. A record of unprecedented beauty, the feeling is just as important as the music and they capture that balance with graceful innocence. On “The Temple”, we get repeating chants of ‘Something is at hand‘ and it’s more like a summoning than a statement – and I find myself absolutely ready to join this coven.
