Scottish musician and producer Nigel Dunn is about to unveil his self-titled debut album under the mononym Rok, after previewing two singles earlier in the year. Rok the album is an immersive electronic journey that ranges from 80s new wave to intricate experimental tones, all lined together with sophisticated lyricism and an incredibly clear artistic vision.

Mostly revolving around his own life, the music created by Nigel draws from a rich and nuanced sonic vocabulary that feels deeply personal and emotional from the very start. Featuring gorgeous production and impeccably put together atmospheres, we get to see Nigel navigating through walls of experimental sounds that still translate as accessible pop songs with catchy melodies and great choruses.
On Rok we get a full experience that goes from The Blue Nile to Dntel, stacking up ideas and influences that overflow with creativity – and Nigel is able to rearrange them into a cohesive narrative and make it feel effortless. “This has been a long awaited release, personally it’s been such a wonderful journey, I’ve got to work with some amazing musicians, and I will be forever grateful for their beautiful input”, the artist comments on the process of creating the record.
Amongst said musicians we get lovely additional vocals from Jessie Miller on single “Little Hands”, one of the most interesting ambiances on the record. Backed by haunting synths that are still oddly comforting, Nigel does a great job in blending steady beats with pulsating electronics and eerie guitar lines. Its sepia-toned music video serves as the perfect imagery for the song, featuring the artist himself singing the track intertwined with cuts of dancers in pierrot-like make-up performing or staring straight into the camera. It’s stunning and breathes new life into the track, that stands as a must-listen number on the album.
Nigel has a way of weaving sounds and textures that feel like spiritual journeys, making an excellent use of all that he’s been through and hopes for the future. “Breathe” relies on trip-hop influences with beautiful orchestrations that flow like a river, marking it a curious contrast to the percussion-heavy and meteoric “This Is War” that immediately follows. Rok is an album that goes through many moods and inspirations, and Nigel as a producer proves himself as a true master of his craft knowing exactly how to place every single one of them.
Another clear highlight is third track “Let’s Go”. An example of how far Nigel can go, as the track features both explosive distorted guitars, pianos and a horn section that create a fairly unique listen. His approach to songwriting focuses on melody and crafts a dynamic sound that unleashes itself at a very constant pace, never revealing everything all at once. That can be felt all throughout the record and there is never a dull moment – all of the crescendos and changes in tempo are fascinatingly well thought-out, making Rok an experience unlike most.
On his debut album, the Scottish artist brings forth an incandescent work that never stays in one place. There is so much happening, it can be dizzying in the best possible way. A record that carefully blends the best parts of experimental electronics with pop sensibility, Rok stands as a constant surprise that is rooted in introspective self-musings just as much as it goes for the big and hazardous.
