Everything Life Throws is the fourth EP by Kingston-based indie band The Report, featuring four tracks and an emotional tone. Comprising of Hugo Allen, Jo Rogers, gary o’key, mark williamson, and jules harley The Report makes music that feels wholesome and warm, creating intricate melodies that are still rooted in simplicity and focused on personal lyricism.
Evoking that particular type of 90s indie music that falls somewhere between Belle and Sebastian, R.E.M., and Imperial Teen, The Report does a great job crafting its sound through nostalgic lenses. Dealing with themes of loss, resilience, and unity, the band draws inspiration from personal experiences, struggles, and social commentary with ease and honesty. They had their passion for music reignited unexpectedly while dropping off their kids at school, Hugo and Jo casually meeting at the school gates, and bonding over shared interests in the same artists. That instant chemistry is palpable all throughout their releases, revealing a level of like-mindedness, compassion and understanding that is a rare find.
Those elements find their way into their musical works brilliantly. We can witness how the band’ succeeds with the melodies and harmonies it is easy to perceive the passion and raw honesty of their work. The sounds heard on Everything Life Throws are peaceful and rooted in kindness, even when the subject matters get a little dark. In a cathartic journey, the songs feel healing and pristine as these guys pour their hearts and as they sing about overcoming adversities, they find solace and companionship.

“We hope that life hasn’t thrown too much at you lately, but then again this is 2024 right!? Our EP explores some complex ideas with some upbeat and even defiant flourishes. Expect big harmonies, rocky vibes, and lots of melodic detail to get into. There’s something here for everyone, we hope.” The Report
Having a string of three deaths as the main inspiration behind the songs, Everything Life Throws does a remarkable job in keeping the spirits up and ties everything with a hopeful silver lining. Weaving their stories with graceful yearning and cautious but relentless optimism – like heard on stunning closer “Not Over”. Filled with life lessons and things learnt along the way, the songs bring comfort to periods of struggle by taking all the pain in and turning them into positivity with respect and love.
Everything Life Throws stands as an homage and memorial to those who they lost, as a bright and light way to keep them and their story alive. The Report’s latest EP feels like a therapy session, in which the traumas and emotional turmoil shift into perspective and unveil themselves as stepping stones toward better days.
