On February 7th, Rothko released their newest single “Breaking Free from Then”, the first track of this ongoing year. It’s a symbolic single about turning a new page in life, something that’s much easier said than done. Mistakes and troubles of the past keep lingering and for some the seemingly easier past feels safer than the uncertain future. Still, one has got to let go.

Change is never comfortable, and leaping into uncertainty is even less so. This is reflected by the dark cavernous bass living inside an uneasy atmosphere along with distorted synths. In a grand lone state, the fear and anxiety meet face-to-face with the desire to move on in life and to find a path to where one wants to go. The past with its false comfort is in the way, too heavy to carry and needs to be shed.
A move towards the future raises its head slowly, but with certainty. Melodies that embody hopefulness start to fill in the space towards the end of the track, tentative at first and frequently interrupted by the anxious bass. Still, the hope keeps growing and the melody is no longer interrupted by terrified thoughts. Now, both are side-by-side, one aiding with the leap and the other keeping your attention up.
Breaking Free From Then was written at a time of transition, of deep uncertainty. I tried to translate and express my feelings of both anxiety and hope into the music.

“Breaking Free from Then” is the first song released this year for Rothko and marks a leap forward for the artist too as he will challenge himself as well as the listeners to approach things in new, different light through explorative and expressive musical journeys.
