And the dagger is one, that hits by surprise. “Twennies,” the recently released new single from Jacqui Beaa, walks through the life of a young adult suddenly facing an unexpected dwindling friendships. At the same time, the tune refuses to sulk and thus keeps up a charming youthful pop sound, one that gets the body moving.

Opened by plucked electric guitar notes, “Twennies” looks back into a recently attended party. Unlike those attended in teenagehood, the usually present friends were no longer present. What was present instead, however, was loneliness. That, and some persistent guy. Jacqui’s emotive and catchy vocals speak of the incidents with a toungue-in-cheek energy, while also admitting she wasn’t ready to find all her friends trickling away into their busy (family) lives.
The song was born from all the change happening around me during my late 20s. I just truly wasn’t prepared for all the friendship breakups that would occur or even losing friends to relationships or even starting families of their own. It came because I realized I was having my heartbroken from friendship loss more than from the dating scene and wanted to share a song that could be relatable to this unspoken experience.
I also live alone and rarely see people these days so I wanted to write something that was honest and true to the loneliness that can be felt in these years, but with an upbeat tempo and fun instrumentals so that people could belt it out or have a little dance with it.

This frustrating experience has been combined with the rawness of Paramore, one of the bands that Jacqui Beaa is heavily inspired by on this song. The emotional depth, transcribed into relatable lyrics, is sprinkled with hints of Lorde. And the combined result is an amalgamation of all kinds of emotions. Those joke pictures of how many friends a person has in specific years seems to be much truer than expected; films of young adults having lots of friends are a lie. But despite that, “Twennies” forges on with unmatched energy.
“Twennies” is the second single coming from Jacqui Beaa, the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter. She’s got a knack for a sound that’s both fresh and nostalgic, and it’s a full-on blend of pop and rock throughout decades. Jacqui Beaa does away with the sadness and melancholy, and even though her songs talk about pretty difficult themes – loss of friendship is hard – she keeps the energy up and moods bright.
