American musician Melissa Engleman has just released late last year the first installment in her upcoming trilogy Love, Death and Mexico in the form of a Bandcamp-exclusive EP titled Love. The singer and songwriter has been through so much over the past years including a cancer diagnosis and pandemic-related delays for her recordings, but still she’s pushing through and making great music.

Her latest Love EP feels like a brand new start for her in face of all adversity, and it’s available exclusively on her Bandcamp page. Inspired by female artists from the 90s, David Lynch movies and oldschool country, Melissa delivers her own brand of dreamy and ethereal alternative country that is enthralling, heartbreaking and utterly unique. “It covers a period of my life that involved getting my heart broken but more importantly learning how to love myself,” Melissa says about these songs, and that really sets the tone that makes this EP so fascinating.

As suggested by the title, the EP features songs about love in many different forms and iterations across five tracks. Melissa’s haunting melodies come across as rich and fulfilling as she sings about difficult topics like cheating, loving someone from afar and dealing with negative voices and thoughts in her own head. “For As Long As My Heart Would Let Me” opens the project with impeccable presence, it’s a short country ballad that relies on deep emotions that feel real and longlasting.

Melissa’s brand of ethereal country sounds absolutely stunning from start to finish, highlighting all of its production details and twangs with elegance and grace. What is truly spellbinding about the EP as a whole is that they’re songs about love – not necessarily love songs. The Texas-based artist brings forth unique perspectives and nuances to such an universal feeling, crafting narratives that beam with humanity and struggles – but always with a lingering sense of hopeful even in the darkest of times.

The closest we get to a proper love song is the incredible “Say Goodbye”, which is about learning to love yourself instead of laying those feelings on undeserving people. It’s an honest track that perfectly captures all of what the EP is about at once, and it’s also the most straightforward country pop production on the record. On the track, the emotional centerpiece of the EP, Melissa sounds confident as she delivers a compelling song about letting go and choosing yourself first.

The Love EP is the first taste of what else Melissa Engleman’s got for us in the future, with the artist herself saying how much she wishes to expand it into a full-length work in the future. Across its five tracks Melissa invites us to a journey of self-discovery rooted in riveting storytelling, making up a short but wildly effective sonic landscape. Songs that speak of vulnerability and toughness in equal measure, reflecting on personal as well as artistic growth that is cathartic and impressive for anyone. She starts off her intended trilogy on a very high and remarkable note, leaving us waiting and wanting to hear more.
