After a string of teasers since 2023, Los Angeles psychedelic rock act My Satellite is finally back with their first album in more than a decade. Person finds the band, led by singer and founding member Bryan Stage, linger into new perspectives and creativity in the format of a concept album. Their first full body of work since 2014’s Lift shows the band at their absolute finest as they dive deep into their own sound and expands it from within.

Person is a collection of many previous singles as well as new tracks that show the band’s range and innovation at once. Described by the band themselves as a “tragic love story that is beautifully strange and deeply emotive”, their sophomore effort is an impressive journey through the instrospective sides of psychedelic indie rock. Featuring grandiose production that include synths and strings, My Satellite delves into groovy melodies and sets the pace right from the start.
The stellar “Deep Into”, released as a single almost six months ago, perfectly captures My Satellite’s psychedelic nuances and flare for dramatic storytelling. The track’s video illustrates the band’s knack for kaleidoscopic imagery and subtlety through a series of strange and ever-changing close ups, creating an unsettling atmosphere that is as beautiful as it is haunting. Person also finally welcomes its original seven-minute run into streaming services, making it their most ambitious song yet – and thankfully it pays off.
Across the album’s ten tracks and fifty minutes, My Satellite runs through several influences and inspirations that go from Tame Impala to Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Their ability to bend sound at their will is truly remarkable as the cinematic ambiances navigated by the band flow perfectly alongside their narrative advances. “Person” follows the story of a relationship evolving through time, its ups and downs, making way for cathartic releases alongside regretful sorrows.
My Satellite really took their time perfecting their sound and songwriting in order to create a modern day classic, taking in delightful pop hooks and throwing them back and forth against each other in their own psychedelic fashion and vision in order to come up with something truly unique. The band doesn’t shy from the idea of creating a masterpiece, and that truly shows as you listen to Person. “We set out to make the psychedelic album that we would want to listen to – an album that would impact others in the same way that Stevie Wonder, Radiohead and Tame Impala albums have us”, Stage comments on their mindset. And with Person they absolutely succeded in doing so.

Person is a record of nuance, even with its maximalist production and large-scale world-building. It does an impressive job in crafting its own entire universe just to zoom in and tell a singular, slice-of-life story with fulfilling dynamics and thrilling twists. On their sophomore album, My Satellite goes for the simple ideas done in unpredictable ways and with compelling complexity that unfolds as an improbable ride through human’s intricate emotions and feelings.
Its final three tracks, dealing with aftermaths and realisations of painful nature, are the most stunning minutes of music released so far into the year. “See Me Off” encapsulates raw emotional trauma unlike most, creating a deeply personal track that yearns for a resolution that may never arrive in its entirety. Person is an album that stays with you long after its last chords were heard, much in the same way that a break up changes your perspectives and never fully leaves you for good.
